AR Lower receivers

Greetings,

Finally, I plunged and decided to build my AR. I was able to put my hands on a 24" RRA Varmint complete upper. Now, I must build the lower.

Can you please tell me if I am better to go with a RRA lower or can I buy a cheaper lower like CMMG, superior arms or Aero? Where is the cheapest and good? Aimsurplus is the usual store I use...

What about the kits? I am not too much excited by the triggers coming in those kits. I would like a match grade trigger. I like the magpul buttstock that you can use to adjust the lenght and the cheek. But it is soooooo expensive. Any hints?

Any help will be appreciated.

I went with a RRA lower I believe from AIM, RRA Match trigger from RRA, I bought a small parts kit less trigger group, a CAA stock saddle, and I believe a CAA colapsable but stock. I am really happy with mine. If you shop around a bit you can find some good deals. Try ar15.com there is a bunch of people selling parts and you can get some good deals.

For the most part a lower is a lower. Spend the money on a trigger group and upper.

RRA is of same quality as other ~$100 lowers. They have MAP pricing that does allow them to be advertised below a certain price, one of the few that do that. I've seen some pop up for $99 in the last month or two, the dellers had to advertise them as "blemished" which gets them out under map pricing although the blems were not really noticable. I think Essential Arms makes RRA lowers, the $105 "toughcoat" version is what they make for RRA if you want one with a EA name on it instead direct from them. Excellent quality. I've heard of more frequent problems with Supeiror and Riggo, mostly with finish work on the mag wells. I'd probably buy a Spike's (cool logo) or the EA or STAG $99-105 lowers.

For the most part a lower is a lower.

Unless you get a bushmaster lower. I've seen them not match up with non bushy uppers.

I'd say stick with the company for the lower that the upper came from, if ony for color/tone matching and so on.

But any lower works fine. If worse comes to worse, you can get a gapper or accuwedge or whatever to straighten out any looseness.

The only real way to tell is to have them both in your hand at the same time. I've had two Stag receivers here (they arrived more than 6 months apart, so were likely manufactured at separate times) that had slightly different color finishes.

I Agree with RP88's reasons to use a RRA lower and add that if you ever decide to sell its easier if the upper and lower match. Some people are suspicious of "Frankenguns" (although I have built and own 2).

for a varmint gun, the lower really doesn't matter

essential is still the cheapest lower of good quality that i know of.

if you paint your gun, the original finish won't matter

for a varmint trigger, lots of good options.

If it were me I would get a RRA lower to match your RRA upper. Here is why. Resale value will be much better and it will sell much easier should you decide to sell it down the road. More than a few potential buyers do not want anything to do with X brand lower with Y brand upper Frankenguns if given a choice in my experience.
