Just finish building my firsy AR...kinda...its done just waiting on the upper from RRA....i am now start a new AR 15 platform build chambered in 458 socom....primary use will be deer hunting in indiana....upper most likely will be RRA carbine lenght 458..im asking for help on the lower....would like to kepp the lower around 300 bucks....so any suggestion or help is greatly appreciated..

Stock- fixed or ajustable? Which one and whh

Trigger- 2 stage or standard and why

Thanks for any help you can provide...feel free to comment on any aspect of the gun

Stock, either will work. One of the advantages of the adjustable stock is that you can shorten the stock when wearing a heavy jacket hunting and lengthen it when wearing a t shirt to the range, thus keeping your cheek weld and eye position in roughly the same spot.

Trigger I think is personal preference. For hunting I think a standard would work fine. IMO 2 stage triggers are for high accuracy long distance rifles eg target or varmint. (I don't know anything about the ballistics of the .458, but I'm guessing it's not a long distance round)

458 is close to the old 45 70...in the right hands it can shoot really far...in my hands probably 250...the longest shot ive ever had to take 150...being in indiana you cant use a high power rifle so range is not what im going for...im going for knockdown power and that is where the 458 shines...right now im thinking im just going to use my lower off my 223 precision rifle to save 400 bucks...maybe a new lower with a magpul UBR in the future...thanks

I'd say go with a fixed stock. I had a .50 Beowulf. I've never shot a .458 Socom, but if it's anything like the .50, the recoil can get pretty stout, depending on the load. Going with a conventional telescoping stock may very well lead to stock failure and it sure would suck to get nailed in the eye by the scope.

Shooting a heavy caliber with a telescoping stock would be something similar to mortoring the rifle with the stock extended every time you pull the trigger. Remember, those stocks are plastic and were intended to withstand the recoil of a .223.

If you just have to go collapsable, I'd recommend something like a Magpul UBR. Mine seems to be built very well, although I think I paid something in the neighborhood of $300 for it. Of course, you may be able to find one used for a lot less.

***Edit, sorry man, I completely went right by your last post.

Yea...i love the style of the UBR and i think i would trust it more with the 458 than a regular buttstock that is supported only by a buffertube..i got a damn good summer job so i may just go on ahead and get a UBR and a semi inexpensive lower and a standard trigger...should put me right around 400 ..prolly spend about 1-200 on a nice 3x9 optic and already have spare AR scope mounts and nice grips i can use...about 700 for the upper and that will still put me under the suggested retail even with a 200 dollar scope

Creek...i will....i hate the factory stocks at the very least it will have a magpull on it ...i love magpull stocks...I use the ACS right now
