Hey folks my next build is going to be a precision gun and i have a few questions. I want a 18" or longer bull barrel, period. What gas system would you reccomend for a build of this nature? Also i would like to use a manufactuer that will sell me a barrel/bolt match set so i know im not loosing any accuracy there, do you know any companies that sell sets like this? Thanks for any info.

Shilen sells their barrels with a matched bolt. White Oak Armament will match a bolt if purchased with the barrel. Fulton Armory will match a bolt if purchased with the barrel. These are folks that I have dealt with.

Other major barrel manufacturers/vendors should offer the service, ask before buying.

I don't know how much of a matched set you are looking for. Most, if not all, are just going to confirm that headspace is within spec.

I assume you are looking at a 5.56/.223 rifle build. Consider a rifle gas and maybe a Wylde chamber.

I use a Lilja barrel with Young Mfg NM chrome BCG and an getting sub .300 moa. To give an idea of its accuracy potential, it shot a measured 5 rd. group from a rifle vise of .488" at 400 yards. If the bolt and receiver extension are made to correct spec. they will head space and is good idea to check with gauges. As far as gas system, rifle length.

I've been told many times that when the terms AR and precision are in a question, the followup answer should include White Oak Armament.

It isn't really my area of interest, but this wisdom has been consistently passed on to me by a large number of very accurate shooters

I shoot a factory DPMS MK12 SPR. It has an 18" stainless heavy barrel with 1 in 8" twist. With my handloads I am under at around .300" at 100yds. Which precision r8ute are you looking to go?

I'm not sure i buy the whole "matched barrel and bolt" thing. Maybe there's something to it, but I've got a hunch otrman hit it. If both are within spec, that's about as matched as you're going to get.

To repeat what some have already said, White Oak Armament has made themselves an excellent reputation in AR barrels.

Definitely rifle length gas system. At 18 and longer inches, a shorter gas system makes for far too long dwell time.

I have heard from many, and it seems to have worked on my varmint rifle, to keep the barrel nut to as close to minimum as you can. 30 foot pounds.

+10000 for white oak!!! John is good people and prices are shockingly affordable for what you are getting.

(ETA I'm not biased because I live a half hour from them; I'm biased because everytime I've been flat out smoked in a High Power competition it's by a WOA rifle....)

Ar precision build barrel selection

Hey guys I want a non threaded heavy barrel for my next build and so far have found the white oak service barrel 20" 223 wylde, and the 24 inch stag heavy barrel that they use on the model 6, it's a 5.56 chamber. I would like to hear your opinions on which barrel may be more accurate. Also open to other suggestions but I would like to stay in the low 200s, which both of these barrels are. Thanks for any info.

.223 Remington if you're confident you'll never put 5.56x45 ammo through the rifle.

If, however, you want to be able to shoot both .223 and 5.56, go with the .223 Wylde.

Ill mostly be handloading but 5.56 will get shot too. I would like to try a wylde chamber, but the stag can shoot 5.56 too. Would like to hear from folks who have tried the stag and woa barrels.

The only AR's I have owned have been DPMS with no problems. Yes people do put them down as compared to other brands. You do see very favorable comments on their stainless barrels. Over at Snipers Hide many have used their MK12 barrels for builds.

I will add the mk12 barrel to my list to research. My first ar was a dpms upper and folks put me under the impression that i had sub par quality.

I bought the Stag Arms model 6 super varminter. Was gonna build a precision AR but this has all I needed, its a real tackdriver. $860 with free shipping from Buds gunshop.

I'm in the middle of my first build. I'm using this: Shilen Drop-In Match Barrel with Bolt AR-15 223 Remington (Wylde) Service Rifle HBAR Contour 20" Stainless Steel. I got it with the 1 in 8" Ratchet Rifling Twist.

It looks like a really nice barrel, but since this is my first build and I haven't completed it yet, I can't compare it to others.

I am a fan of the nitrocarborized barrels as well, but can't speak to their accuracy or life beyond my laymen use.

My 5.56 and 6.8 barrels are made by AR Performance and have received the nitrocarb treatment. He makes fancy bolts like in post 18 too, but also leaves a little more material at the base of each lug and around the cam pin hole for increased strength.

Rainier will sell a matched BCG with their barrels and their precision barrels are pretty top notch. As noted early, Noveske will do the same. If you can shoot better than either of those two then you are quite the shooter.
