There has to be an unorthodox but effective method for removing that little :cuss: with a garage full of tools, none of which are an armorer's spanner wrench. We've tried the stick-a-flathead-in-the-notch-and-hammer method, we've tried a strap wrench, and we've tried an adjustable wrench with a rubber band as a buffer. So far, no good. Any ideas?

An armorer's spanner wrench should do the trick. hint hint use the right tool for the job

Did you flatten out where it was staked? Of course it could be red Loctited on in which case refer to post 2.

read that someone else tried to remove the barrel nut and ended up cutting the nut apart, the nut was torqued without lubricating it and the threads galled under torque
Try applying a penetrating oil before doing something drastic,
I mean a combo wrench can be ordered from bushmaster for about 20.00 usd.
I am sure the rifle in question is worth that kind of investment other wise the only idea I can come up with is a pipe vise and potentialy a lot of weapon dammaging torque.

20.00 bucks is cheaper than a new rifle

if you're buying a tool... try that hammerhead. i'll look it up and send a link later.

Thanks, taliv! There's one on its way to me now. For the price, that thing looks about ten times more solid than anything I've seen on Brownell's.
