AR red dot

My dad stopped by last night and mentioned adding a turkey barrel to his T/C Encore. He was discussing an RDS with me so I grabbed a few to show him and his eyes lit up with that Eotech. I watched as he repositioned to acquire the other dots versus the almost immediate location of the holographic.

I know it doesn’t conform to price or battery requirements, just thought I’d mention it based on 1 more bit of feedback from someone who had never seen one up close. A few hundred dollars for a piece of home defense gear is well worth it IMO, though I understand there may be other constraints.

I have a Trijcon fiber optic on my upstairs AR. Pretty awesome.

This one is for my wife’s downstairs AR. Since the chance of it being used are considerably less than 1/10th of 1%, I wasn’t looking for another $500-$800 option. Maybe there’s something along the same lines at my price point, but I suspect not

While I advocate the TRS25 for a cheap beater that works and can take a beating, if you’re going to up your budget (as some are saying with Aimpoints), I would also highly recommend the Trijicon MRO. It is fantastic and can usually be found under $400, the cheapest I’ve seen it for was around $330ish, but that was a while ago. The field of vision on it beats any other red dot, the claims of slight magnification, bluish tint, and other things are overblown. Shooting with one is wonderful, I’ve used one on my SLR104 for a few years now and plan on eventually getting another for my Galil Ace 556. Once my TRS25 dies (if it ever does), guess what I’ll likely replace it with?

There seems to be an embarrassment of riches nowadays with good quality RDS. If I limit myself only to models I have owned or used it narrows things down a bit. The Holosuns I've had have been good but those exact models have been replaced with newer ones. I had a Sig Romeo5 on my CZ Scorpion for a couple years and was terrific. Never had any issues with it at all and it was really amazing for $125! I sold the Scorpion and the Sig along with it but I'd definitely get another one I had a weapon in need of a RDS. I'd have problem relying on one for a home defense gun.

I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention the Aimpoint PRO! It's double your stated budget but a fantastic optic. If I knew I had to fight with the rifle I keep by the bed it would have an Aimpoint (which is does). Right now I have an Aimpoint PRO on my Bren and an Aimpoint Comp M5 on my PWS; supposedly the Comp M5 is their most durable model but if you're not going to be HALO jumping or something there are some things I actually prefer about the PRO.

Edit: Huh, nothing posted the first time.

Did you find that your Romeo 5 was able to co-witness with the factory scorpion irons? Asking because I went with a TRS-25 for my setup because the Romeo 5 I acquired second hand only has the high rise mount and I had no way to check. Thanks.

My version of the Romeo5 had a high mount (either lower 1/3 or true, can't recall as I never used it) and the low mount. With low mount I think it cowitnessed the factory irons but I can't swear it. I sold the Scorpion earlier this year and the RDS went in the sale. Sorry that I'm not 100% sure as I don't have the Scorpion anymore.

I've been shopping for a red dot lately and came across several references to holographic sights working better than red dots for folks with astigmatism. No idea whether that applies to your dad (or even whether the claims are true), but here's a link for example: https://www.pewpewtactical.com/best-optics-for-astigmatism/
