What AR competitions are out there that I can participate in?

What size barrel should I get when I build my complete upper that would be most fitting for AR competitions?

You can look into 3-gun or multi-gun competition, but probably NRA highpower is where you'll see the most AR15's on the firing line.

For NRA highpower, you'll need an AR15 with a 20" barrel in A2 or A4 configuration.

+1 on the 20". You can shoot USPSA 3 gun or other Multi gun, along with DCM. The hot ticket in multigun right now is 18"- but that pretty much entails cutting a 20" barrel down.:uhoh:

White Oak for High Power.
JP Enterprises for Multigun/3 Gun.

You could probably put together a rifle that could pull double-duty for both if you bought/built a gun for High Power, but used a flat-top upper. That way you could use the detachable carry handle with the iron sights for shooting High Power, and replace it with a scope for shooting Tactical Scope division in Multigun.

You can also build a space gun version of th AR15 for match rifle category. That can be anywhere from a 26 to 28 inch, for the most part. John Holliger sells a nice Wilson 26" complete with gas block and tube. (one in seven twist)
