So, I decided to buy an AR before Obama bans them, trouble is everyone else had the same idea.

I looked online, everything was out of stock.

I went to my local gun shop, they quickly looked at their distributors stock, and came back with 6 options.

Of those 6 only two were collapsible stock and 16 in. barrel. I stepped outside and called their competition, roughly the same story.

I ended up picking up an Olympic Arms, even though it was not my first, second, or even third choice. But... I have a friend, a Pierce County Sheriff, who carries and Oly in his car on duty. He likes his, says it's reliable and accurate (for a stock carbine).

I am wondering, is the (somewhat negative) olympic reputation an internet phenomenon or one based in fact. I'd love to hear from people who actually do own one of their rifles, and preferably not hear from you if your friend's cousin's UPS driver's gay husband told you drunk one night that they were "crap". :scrutiny:

I already bought the darned thing after going to three places to see if they could do better, so I'll post a review when I get some cheap ammo to run through it.

Also, please feel free to sound off if you are facing a similar situation :cuss:

I bought an oly k16, i shot well over 500 rounds and never had a single problem, so i would have to say it's a rumor

I'm not an AR fan even though I have bidded on one listed on GB. Its a Charles Daly DR-15. It has the 20" barrel and fixed butt stock and permanent carry handle. So far I haven't hit the reserve. Thats good because I did by a new Mini-14. Thats what I really wanted anyway.

I have to mail off the money tommorow. I'm through bidding.

So at least there is one AR still left.

I also think the market is going to be flooded with these guns if the economy keeps going downhill. Folks that bought these in a panic may have to sell just to survive. I think the only change Obama is going to bring is even worse bad news.

My Oly has backed up my Colts in half a dozen classes when the Colts went tits up. The old forged Shorty never has despite living in my Jeep for years.

Everyone is running out, and ammo for the black rifles is going too.

Too bad folks don't trust the new President-elect, for he promised gun enthusiasts at rallies three things to get votes:

1. "I'm NOT going to take away your guns!"

2. "I support the 2nd Amendment!" and third . . .

3. "However, we will need 'RESPONSIBLE' gun laws."

Folks, HE'S NOT GONNA TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY! I heard him say it!!!

Nawww . . . he won't take our guns . . . but his soon to be announced pick for Attorney General, ERIC HOLDER (Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno's top assistant) will!

Eric Holder is a staunch supporter of the Brady Bill and for reviving the AWB. This guy is about the worst pick for the country's chief prosecutor as the gun community could have feared.

I'm stunned . . . we been lied to!

Folks, ya better start calling all the Senators and tell them that the gun community will remember who votes to confirm this guy! Senators need to go to work now to convince the President-elect that this would lose him any chance of bringing people together, BEFORE the nomination is official!

If you wait a month you'll see things settle back down...maybe! Oly's for the most part are underated rifles. Don't use Laquer coated steel case ammo in them and you'll be fine.

Funny how B. Hussein Obama says he is both FOR the unconstitutional DC gun ban, and FOR the 2nd amendment. Depends on whether you believe the Obama who has been against the 2nd amendment since he entered politics, or the Obama during the last three weeks of the campaign while essentially running as a conservative.

I've heard about this laquer coating problem before... Which brands are coated? Anyone know?

Most steel case ammo is laquer coated some of the new stuff is polymer coated...I'm pretty sure it too can build up on chamber walls and cause problems.

like you said, they arnt first or even fourth choice. but the are reliable and functional.

they are just on the cheaper end of the spectrum. not that that bad, its just if your going to spend the 600 might aswell spend the 800

i dont own one, i have a bushmaster, and get the same flak to the point of being of the strong opinion that some of it comes from pickup truck commandos that will only settle for the best (which happens to be the one they own)

i would personally be more inclined to believe a feller who bought one with his hard earned money and put a few thousand rounds through it than a brightly colored chart where the "good rifles" get checkmarks, and "the rest" dont.

colt is the absolute shiz on this here internet machine

my first ar was a colt model 6700 a3 match target rifle

my current ar is a 16" bushmaster hbar.

to keep the armchair commandos undies from getting twisted, i wont say which one i like more.

shoot it and tell us how it does.

I have had an Olympic Arms AR for 4 years now and I not had a minute's trouble out of it. It's not a Hbar but it a nice copy of the GAU I carried in the AF for 20 years.
