my dad wants to give me his old Olympic arms ar-15 rather then me purchase a new rifle. does anyone know were the Olympic arms stand in the charts in line with colt or smith and wesson. would anyone recommend i buy a new rifle over taking the old one?

Olympic Arms is generally ranked with DPMS, and they're entry-level ARs for the most part. Not quite in the same league as Rock River, Bushmaster, or S&W. However, if you can get one for free, GO FOR IT!

I have heard that the old olys are a lot better than the new ones. What i would do is take the rifle and buy another one without his knowing. As the saying goes, 2 ARs are better than 1 ARs:D

The new Olys are better. They're actually a good arm nowadays... they don't use casting in the lower receivers anymore.

IIRC, the "Plinker" model is the one which used to have the cast upper and lower reciever. A friend of mine had one, and it was very crude looking (rough finish, blurry rollmarks and such). Newer ones are all forged, including the Plinker models.

Yes, the new ones are better, and I would have no problem with buying one for the right price.

im not a huge fan of Oly's but they are reliable and functional.

id vote you take the rifle, keep it and use your extra money to buy mags and ammo

im just wondering weather or not its as accurate as the other rifles.

How accurate is it? How accurate are you? Take it out and shoot it and see what if the two of you are accurate enough together.

It should be pretty accurate. Most AR's are.

I'd go with it, and buy a few mags and some ammo, maybe even an optic if you want. And if you upgrade to a LMT bolt carrier group someday, that will take care of a lot of "The Chart" stuff, if that's important to you.

A gift of an Oly is a fine gift. Appreciate it and use it in good health. If you want another AR later that is your decision.

Years from now, when you are old, you will remember fondly the gift of this rifle from your father to you. You will remember all that your father did, and refrained from doing. You will remember him fondly, as you inspect your Oly rifle. You may indeed buy a better rifle at some point, you may sell other rifles, but this one will always be with you.

olympic makes very very good barrels, its funny everybody loves to put down olympic
i have a 20 flat top olympic that groups/functions very very well between dad and i we have 7 AR's oylmpic,del-ton,dpms,double star,colt.......lol they all shoot great(except for the colt its very picky about the ammo you put in it)

+1 The Oly's from the past few years are good rifles, no more problems than any others. They have a good warranty and customer service.
