Re: barrel clamp-on front sight on a free-floating barrel? I dunno ... sounds to me like it would affect barrel harmonics and thus accuracy. Though I suppose if it's sighted in with the clamp-on sight installed, it really doesn't make a difference, as it's a "permanent" fixture. Anybody that knows more about free-floating barrel harmonics please fill us in ...

It could affect harmonics, but probably not enough to matter if you're planning on using irons and the gun is otherwise stock, and this is a defensive gun that won't get used much past 200 yards.

But if you're shooting 400+ yards with your own handload recipe, low pull aftermarket trigger, installed decent glass, sure, it'd be worth doing a side-by-side test to check.

Flip up front and rear sights are available and the ones made by MagPul are pretty decent for the money.

But IMO the best option is a conventional low powered scope. Something in a 1-4X20 is faster to use on 1x for close fast shots than either dot or iron sights. And on 4X you have enough magnification to hit human size targets out to 300-400 yards. For the same money you'll get a better quality sight with a conventional scope than a dot sight anyway.

And they aren't that much bigger nor heavier.

You COULD add the flip up sights as backup to a scope, but in my experience iron sights are more likely to fail than a scope. I don't even waste time with irons anymore.

My father recently bought a Smith and Wesson Sport II AR. I told him to get one with iron sights but when he showed it to me, it’s the version with no sights just a rail. I now need to get him something so that it is useable. I assume there is no way to get iron sights for it since there is no front sight, so if I’m stuck with a red dot, what do you recommend?

I would get the UTG Super Slim flip up sights and this red dot, everything for under $150 and you’ll have a solid setup that won’t break the bank
