Hello, im getting a AR with a Magpul MOE handguard on it and want to mount a grip on the bottom, my question is how many slots on a rail does a vertical grip take up? this is my first AR, i only want the rail i put on the magpul to be big enough just for a vertical grip nothing else, is this to small to mount a vertical grip on?

also who makes a good affordable vert. grip? not trying to put a 80 grip on a 30 dollar handguard.

it usually only touches a few (3-4) slots on a rail, but because your hand will be there, you normally can't use any of the slots on either side of the grip w/o chewing up your knuckles. how you hold the vfg (and there are half a dozen different ways) will determine how many useful slots you have left

in my experience, the difference in cheap and quality VFGs is how much time you spend tightening them and re-tightening them

edit: if i were in the market for a vfg, i'd search the forums at arfcom, m4c and lightfighter for a used tango down stubby

Ergo makes some inexpensive VFGs

That's more like it. I could be missing something, but I have never understood why a simple plastic (or metal) tube and rail mount should cost over $70, as most forward grips do.

thanks for the heads up on the ERGO grips, seem decent for a beginner, i plan on eventually railing the gun and then ill get a more heavy duty grip

One bit of advice, stay away from ProMag. Mine sucks. It tightens up from the bottom, as opposed to the top, and having a compartment on the bottom like most. Also, the tab that keeps it in the rail slots is gradually wearing away. Worst $20 I spent on my Saiga so far.
