Its always something

OK on the last shot fired yesterday, my AR15 action didn't stay open. Are there mags designed to do this, these were 20rd aluminum C-Products mags. Also when I drop the mag, reinsert and pull the bolt back, the action stays open so it's really a firing the last round issue

What do I look for ?

Usually cause you don't have enough umph. Either weak ammo or a prob with the gas system.

Try some better ammo. Make sure there is nothing obstructing the gas tube or block and the gas rings on your bolt are ok.

ok yes I tried another mag same issue

I just looked at both mags one is C-P grey follower. The other is a D&M Industried w/ green. Both empty mags into gun, bolt will lock back

ammo was Fiocchi, and M193 (two types)

yes I have a B.A.D. lever...

Try PMags and see if that helps. If not I would take the BAD lever back to the mall for a refund.

I'll try that it's a new addition I don't remember this happening b4 now that I think about it

Why would a device which is designed to assist fail in exactly that

Will refire in a few days, and then perhaps call MPull

This is one of the many reasons the B.A.D. lever is a bad idea. It puts extra weight and strain on the bolt catch. This part and the springs involved in its operation are not meant to support a bolt on part that weighs more than the original part. Add in the inherent dangers of the B.A.D. Lever and there is no reason to put one on a gun.

I didn't have this particular issue when I tried them out but I have seen a number of people that have. They tend to make it about till lunch on the first day of a class before they are pulled off.

you could also try adding some oil to the bolt release pivot point. That happened to me at one point (home build, no bad lever) and some oil fixed it.

Never had much use for anything but the standard bolt catch on an M16 type rifles.
All the "improved" models don't seem to do anything positive for the gun or the shooter.

I've got a couple of BAD levers. On my M&P15 it works fine. On my SBR it causes the same problem you're having. I like the idea and it's especially helpful for clearing double feeds but it just doesn't work consistently. I'll be taking it off of my M&P next time I take it out.

Just an update, the B.A.D. lever was the culprit. Range session started with a partial mag, no hold open. Took the lever off, everything's ok

thanks for the tips & suggestions!

Just curious here, but would a new, or stronger bolt catch spring also solve the problem (assuming you like the BAD lever)?

I had a "kit" gun once that had the same problem "without" a BAD lever on it, and a new spring fixed it right up.

I have BAD levers on three of my AR's, and none have been a problem so far, other than initially getting used to them.

I've put a new bolt catch spring in on a lower build, wouldn't really like doing it again. And one poster got me thinking about stuff inside the trigger ring...soon I'll be using gloves on hunts do I want an extra item in there to touch off? Probably not might try again in spring!
