I have a question.

A friend of mine has a chance to purchase this ar for aroun $800.

Can someone tell me anything (good or bad) about this particular setup.

Older Olympic Arms (SGW) rifles manufactured in the 80's and early 90's tended to have very tight tolerances. This made the weapons quite accurate...when they were working properly. Afterall, there is such a thing as having too tight of tolerances. It is my belief that many of the rifles manufactured in the era you are considering were problematic.

Anectdotally, a trusted friend of mine was very active in 3-gun competitions in the 80's and early 90's around the Pacific Northwest. Olympic Arms (SGW) was one of the few AR manufacturers at the time - not like today where you have "boutique" AR vendors. Many folks my friend shot with owned SGW/Olympic Arms rifles. It was reported to me that these rifles were very picky about being cleaned and well-lubricated. Lots of Oly Arms/SGW owners would do what we now call the "SGW dance" which refered to them breaking down their rifles and cleaning/tweaking during the middle of a match. FWIW, my friend used an Armalite AR-180 for 3-gun competition. He still owns the rifle and loves it.

That being said, I own an Olmypic Arms K3B with a manufacture date of approximately August/September 1994 (records lost by Oly as stated above). I purchased the gun un-fired with 1000 rounds of PMC ammo, original box, paperwork and 7 30-round GI magazines for exactly $800 cash early in 2007. Since then, I have about 300 rounds through it without ANY issues.

The deal you're into seems fair given the trigger work and optics. You may have issues re-selling it if the potential buyers are AR-snobs - Oly Arms is generally viewed to be a mid-low tier manufactuer. Not that I agree with this, but it is the common perception.
