I had been thinking about getting an AR10 to use for hunting and self-defense. After posting, and talking to some people, I think I may have been convinced that getting an AR15 (my friends company custom builds AR15's) for self-defense, and a Remington 700 for hunting...

That said, my question is how customizable is an AR15? Like, if I'm willing to spend the money, how "useful" can I make an AR15?

How many varieties of Legos are there? :evil:

Yes, you are only limited by funds and imagination. Long to short barrels, adjustable stocks, as many miles of mounting rail that you want, and chamberings in .22LR, .223 standard fare, medium variants like 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendal, to thumpers like .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf, and many more.....

Alrightie. Remember the Legos you had as a kid, and how by just snapping together a couple pieces could transform a minivan into a sports car? Well now imagine you had the entire Lego factory to build with. That's about how many possibilities there are with the AR-15 family.

Pop 2 pins, and its a .22 plinker. Pop those same 2 pins, and you have a .50 caliber bear gun. Pop those 2 pins again, and you can fight to Baghdad and back.

Useful=Accurate/Dependable/Lethal
Also, and I think 68wj touched on this but how many different types of ammo can that gun take?

the ar15 is only limited by the length of its action as far as ammo goes. Some companies are making up to .50bmg uppers, but those only use the lower for the trigger group, they have their own magazines/bolts. So yeah a whole lot of ammo types can be used in the ar15.

You will have so much fun with the AR15 you wont be able to stop, it can get so addicting. with all the different accessories. I have two of them which I enjoy just going to the shooting range with and shooting, however their primary purpose is to be my coyote shooters, which they work perfect for.

Fun? Ohhhh yeah, it's fun all right. I own Ar 15's in 5.56, 6.8 SPC, and .243 WSSM. Unfortunately I have OCD and I have to have things in 3's. Looks good right? Not quite, I have 3- 5.56's, etc etc. Not sure if it's really an OCD thing or if I reallllllllly just like AR 15's. Either way as far as the wife's concerned it's surely a sickness. But honest doc, I feel fine. Long as I get my medicine.

I think the best one I've heard in a while is that the AR-15 is a Barbie doll for grown men, we get one and then buy outfits and accessories for it.
