Building an LR-308?

I put together an AR15 last year and really enjoyed the process. I was thinking about doing one or two ARs this year as summer came towards an end, but a buddy of mine is edging me more towards doing a 308 build. It would be fun because it'd be another similar rifle, but it'd have more practical uses for me as I could hunt with it comfortably.

I just wanted to know, if I wanted to build a LR308 or AR10 on a budget what would it end up costing me? Ball park figures without glass. I'd use it for hunting mostly, longest shooting distance would realistically be 300 yards if the rifle was capable of that.

How heavy are these rifles when put together with a 20" barrel?

I've read that the LR308 and AR10 upper receivers are not interchangeable. Are there any other parts that are not interchangeable?

If what I think is right, I could build a really budget LR308 or a really nice AR15. Which of the two would you guys rather have and why? I'm just struggling to see if it'd be worth it to spend the cash on this project vs 1 or 2 AR15s or a nice build with a lot of bells/whistles....or possibly an AR15 in a different caliber.

The AR15 well be a lot cheaper to feed. Everyone should experience the BIG AR's. It's the fire arm Stonier wanted to make.

The .308/7.62 AR's do not interchange parts like the AR15. About the only thing that's universal are some of the LPK parts. Uppers/lowers, barrel nuts, bolt release, magazine catch are just some of the parts that can be proprietary.

There is not a lot of savings to be had when building a .308. Individual components are much higher in cost when compared to .223 rifles.

The savings might not be there, but the satisfaction sure is and the shooting goodness is there in great heaps! Them .308 ARs are fun to shoot and oh so accurate!

5.56 rifles are no longer cheaper to feed. Ammo prices have come up a lot lately. Brass cased 5.56 is pretty much on par with 7.62x51 surplus.

I think I'm going to go with an LR308 lower and a completed LR 308 upper. I'll just put together a lower. It won't really save me any money, but I can buy it in pieces. The reviews from Midway on the uppers say they shoot pretty damn good for being complete uppers. So there won't be much building there, lol.

I think it'd make an interesting stand gun for hunting too. I'll probably go with a 20" barrel.

Does anyone have any advice for me?
