AR15s.....What is wrong with S&W if anything

Nothing really wrong with them, just shop prices around.

I believe it's still made with CMT/Stag parts, maybe some LMT too. S&W doesn't make any of it, they just put it together.

One thing wrong with it; the price.

Its just an AR15 like a dozen other brands of AR15 ... its not gold plated or a valuable early Colt collectible yet its priced quite a bit above its competition simply because of who's name is carved in the side of it.

Check out AR15.com. I believe there are a number of threads on the topic of magazines that fit a number of lowers but do not fit the M&P's.

S&W makes them in house now. The early ones which used Stag lowers wouldn't take Pmags the new ones will. As for pricing they're about on par.

I have an M&P15A that has been flawless since day one. It has around 900 rounds through it, which isn't much, but it hasn't had problems. It is in the 6xxxx serial number range.

I don't have problems with pmags, they're my primary mag.

I believe the newer ones have extended "M4" style feed ramps. Mine is before they started doing that and so I have standard rifle feed ramps. I bought mine in May from budsgunshop. Mine has an "H" buffer but a Semi-Auto BCG. Older ones didn't have the H buffer. My Noveske has an H2 buffer and a F/A BCG.

The only downside to them is that the barrel is 16" but uses a carbine length gas system, at least it does for the A, which is kinda silly. But it does work.

I don't know.. I paid 850 for mine and got a $100 rebate. $750 was quite a good deal on this rifle. I love mine. No probs with pmags in mine either.

Friend back east bought one in 5. X39. (necked down to 22 cal). LOVES
IT. Ammo cheap for now. Seems it was in the $800 range. Functions
great with reasonable acurracy

I've been looking at the 15X model, with the quadrail, standard front sight and flip up rear sight. My local shop can get it for $1,009.00, which seems to be a decent price considering I would eventually want a quadrail and flip up rear sight on any AR anyway. Similar Bushmaster M4s with plastic handguards and just a standard removable handle seem to be about the same price as the M&P 15X, which looks like a better rifle to me than the Bushmaster. I guess the question is: Is the M&P worth the couple hundred more than a Stag or DPMS? I just really like the way the 15X is set up, as I'd have to spend extra money to set up a similar Bushmaster, DPMS, Stag, etc.

I'd say so. If you check out M4carbine.net or the AR15.com forums, you'll see that the quality of parts are generally better on the S&W than, say, DPMS or Bushmaster.

Seriously considered the S&W just last week for $950. It felt real nice to me..no complaints here.

+1.....Same here... I got mine for $799.00, and got the $50.00 rebate. They also threw in 3 free mags, to make 4, as well.(Missed the $100.00 rebate by a few days.) Obviously they're going up in price now, but so are the rest of 'em...Great accuracy...And there's a reason they're more than an OLY, or DPMS...To answer the OP's question, there's not a thing wrong with the S&W AR15 OR...Show me something for $750.00 in any of those others equipped like the S&W...Go for it, it's a great rifle...:)

Their price is generally on par with their quality in the continuum of such things.

I'd like to hear quantifiable reasons from those that think they are too expensive, or that think they are only buying a name.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the "OR" model, they do tend to be priced such that they are hard to argue with.

My local gunshop has one with a forward rail setup and government profile barrel for just under $900, which at the moment is a steal.

I just bought one for $899. Not bad considering the insanity of the current market. It was cheaper than a nearly identical Bushy. It has functioned with all the mags I've tried, including PMAGs.

For me the OR is the preferred model, pi$$ poor eyes make optics the only way to go. No sense buying open sights if you can't use 'em. It's primarily going to be a range/paper rifle.

Stag only made the very early ones, and S&W quickly brought production in house because of QC issues (namely out of spec lowers with tight mag wells). S&W was making AR trigger groups long before they started selling AR-15s; they have one of the largest small parts forging, MIM, and heat treating facilities in the US, and make parts for many other gun manufacturers. S&W also own T/C Arms, who has made the barrels for all in house assembled M&P-15 rifles. I don't know who they're sourcing the HPT/MPI BCGs from. Like everyone else, S&W buys receiver forgings from one of the handful AR-15 receiver forging houses. Sabre is the only AR-15 manufacturer I'm aware of who makes their receivers in house.

To answer the OP's question, there isn't anything wrong with M&P-15 rifles, and there is quite a bit right with them.

I'm not sure of that. When I took the factory tour, the guide showed us upper and lower forgings that he said were done right there in Springfield. He also had some Harley-Davidson shift forks on display that S&W apparently makes as well. Pretty cool.

I just bought the 15x today...waiting on FFL to ship it though as Colorado (and I'm sure other states) is darn near impossible to get an AR in. I am excited though to get a hold of it and give 'er a go :)
