Are 1858 rem. and colt 45 about same size

The reason for asking is I saw a cowboy holster in cabelas catalog. I liked it but it says for colts and clones thereof. Rem. is only "cowboy" pistol I have. Don't need or want another. So will the rem. fit in the holster well,so you can draw reasonably quickly? Also the belt has cartridge loops which I had thought
of putting paper cartridges in. Would this be a dangerous situation? Seems like even if it did blow up if you fell down or something the thick leather belt would protect you.

Well I read your post, went and got my camera, Remmy and holster and took
a picture. Up-loaded it and here we are. Who says this fourm doesen't
deliver? Ask and you shall receive. Here is my Pietta Remmy in a holster I
bought from Cabelas as a SAA holster for a 4 3/4 barrel pistol. It fits the
Remmy just perfect!!!

Black powder does not ignite from percussion (falling on it). You could hit it with a hammer and it still won't go off!

I have a foot in both worlds, cartridge and percussion. Cabelas has a whole lot of percussion revolver stuff. I suggest that sticking paper cartridges in the loops on your holster is probably not dangerous but I don't think it will do the cartridges any good. I am new to percussion so I would play things really conservatively. Cabelas has a flap holster (like in Civil War) and various other things which will hold your required items. Check 'em out. I'd give you a hyperlink but you can pull up Cabelas by just typing in "Cabelas".

I wonder why you want to use a holster made for a metallic cartridge weapon for a percussion piece.

Be Well, and do things as safely as possible. Black powder and or its' equivalents is explosive unlike modern gun powder which if fast burning. BP is more hazardous; so, I suggest you stay conservative in your experiments.

Black powder is NOT explosive, if by explosive you mean it detonates. TNT detonates. Black powder burns really, really fast, and thus has a pressure curve that rises and falls faster than smokeless powder. If it detonated (exploded) no gun barrel would survive!

ok here you go. if you ever wanted to the 1858 is perfect for getting a conversion cylinder. This would allow you to shoot 45 colt through your remington. then you could put real cartridges in the belt. i would never put paper cartridges in the belt as they could get contaminated. as for the holster most single action colts are short barreled. for a good custom fitting holster at an awesome price. contact bigbadguns look him up on the walker club he can make you a custom holster and belt that would looj perfect

The only fly in the ointment is the loading lever web. Depending on the curve in the leather, it may not be accommodated, and that is why the photgraphed gun's triggerguard is so far out of the holster.

I don't know which of Cabela's many holsters you are looking at. This is my Pietta 1858 New Army conversion in Cabela's Oklahoma Leather 7-1/2" Double Loop Holster. The belt is not from Cabelas. I think trying to carry paper cartridges in belt loops would be an exercise in futility.

All you need is a couple of extra cylinders,as in the movie pale rider,you can swap out a loaded cylinder real quick even with caps on the nipples,carefull no ungracefull movements,practice with a empty cylinder with only caps on it,if a cap goes off youll know what not to do when its loaded

I know it doesn't make much practical sense for me to want to put paper cartridges in the loops. I just wanted to do something with them. As for gitting more cylinders or a conversion I can only get so many things at once and I'd rather get the holster right now. What I am looking at is the new black cowboy drop loop holster for $80 for belt and holster. That is about as high as I want to pay, really. I know that cabelas has plenty of holsters specifically for black powder but I don't see any for 5 1/2 in. barrel. and to me it also looks cooler

the drop loop ''Buskedero'' type rig really isn't all that authentic.The Oaklahoma rig posted above is a good one. Reasonably priced too, I have several.

That is so but somebody probably made one somewhere and I'm not that worried about period correctness. Thanks though. What I need now is for someone to tell me wether my 5 1/2 in. gun will fit the holster I'm looking at. But that is why I asked here instead of calling cabelas , its fun to learn what other people think about a topic.

I know for sure it'll fit in the Oklahoma holster pictured above, because that's exactly the one I have for my Remmie...but to answer your question, yes. The Remington and the 1873 SAA will fit the same holsters admirably.

As others stated paper cartridges in loops will not be too stable for them. They will easily get crushed, split open and become a real mess. If you want to carry them as in the old days, get a Cap Box from Dixie Gun Works or other sales sites. The standard infantry cap box will hold up to 12 paper cartridges (at least in .36 cal.) and was in fact the same device used by federal troops in the civil war to carry said paper cartridges.
