I currently have two black powder reproduction pistols; an Uberti 2nd model Colt Dragoon and a Pietta 1858 Rem. .36 caliber, also called the sherriff's model. I am thinking about getting a Howell conversion cylinder to shoot modern day cartridges (in cowboy loads). Just curious as to which one will work better or shoot better with the Howell conversion cylinder. The conversion cylinder will enable the 1858 to shoot .38 Specials and the Dragoon to shoot .45 colt. Any thoughts/experiences with shooting a Howell conversion cylinder with either of these repro pistols? I am looking at the Howell due to having to avoid fitting machining that might be needed with the Kirst conversion. Thanks.

Yes I have or had the Howell conversion cylinders (also R&D) for all of my revolvers and they have all worked great. Got them here;

I had the 44 caliber Remington and it shot well.

In the Dragoon you could also shoot the 45 Schofield round out of them.

Heeled bullets?

Are the Cowboy loads from Black Hills a heeled bullet? Someone said I need to use heeled bullets only with the C&B revolvers.

Only the 36 caliber the 45 caliber is good. Here is a good bullet,

From their web site;

"This is THE ammunition for those that have cartridge conversion on there 36 caliber percussion revolvers and any 38 Long Colt chambered firearms. Loaded using black powder. The 38 caliber hollow base bullet will bump up to take the rifling in the barrels .375" groove."
