I have an opportunity to pick up an H&G 4-cavity for .45Long Colt for $150 with handles. I'm new to casting so is this worth it? Where do H&G fit in the quality list?

It all depends.

First it depends on condition. If the mold has been battered with a hammer and beat up, then it's not worth it. Is it an original H&G mold, or one made by Ballisticast? Ballisticast owns the rights to the H&G molds.

The originals usually go for more money, but the Ballisticast molds I have are of good quality, but the company has changed hands more times than Elizabeth Taylor, so it depends on who actually made the mold.

If it's in good shape, then it's worth it, but if it's been abused, pass on it.

Hope this helps.

H&G IMO makes very good bullet profiles with their molds. I especially like the H&G #512 which drops a 170gr bullet (with most alloys) which I use to load my 38 S&W ammo. That bullet is extremely accurate in my Enfield No.2.

The H&G #68 is coveted by Bullseye shooters for making 200gr LSWC ammo for the 1911.

I have an old 4-cavity H&G mould that drops a .359" 160 gr. bullet. The quality of the mould and the ease at which it casts is profound.

Yes. They are that good IF theyve been properly cared for. I'm also assuming you're over at the castboolits site with the same question and with similar handle over there. If not, check out that thread as well.

There are several high quality molds out there. We can steer you toward the right path, just ask.
