Hello all,

Maybe you can help me out. I purchased 5 new ar-15 30rd mags at gun/pawn shop yesterday. They were in plastic sleeves with light grease. When I got them home I noticed that the finish on these mags is different from the finish on the 20rd mags that came with my LE6920. The finish on my 20rd mags is the teflon finish that wears easily, these 30rd mags have a solid gray finish almost like a paint or baked on coating. So, have colt mags ever come with a non-teflon finish? BTW these have a green follower.

Thanks for your help

Colt has never made thier own mags. They are good USGI mil spec mags but nothing special with them

Unless someone went through the trouble of putting green followers and Colt marked floorplates on cheap mags, you're likely okie-dokie....I have some Colt mags which look exactly as you describe. Load em up and shoot....

It's dry film. And from the description, they sound like they look exactly how they should. Is there a brand stamped on the mag? It won't say Colt btw because Colt doesn't manufacturer their own mags.

Maybe now they don't but at one time they may have. I have a 20 round mag (cicr. 1972) that is marked Colt AR 15,cal 5.56MM, Colt's PT.F.A. MFG.Co.Inc., Hatford, Conn. USA. I picked this up when I was in the military.

The magazine floorplate should have the Colt rampant colt logo and the written Colt info.

There were no marks on the mag body except for that dorky ban when some had a date stamped on the mag body.

I have several older Colt-marked mags, but that does not mean Colt made them. :)

I have multiple 20 and 30 round Colt marked magazines from the 1970's. They were common in US Army use at the time as well

My blocked HBAR mag that came with the gun is marked as a Colt product.

BTW do whatever the color of the week improved plastic followers are work in both 20s and 30s?

20 round mags didn't need "improved" followers in the first place.
They worked just fine the way they were.

The need for an "improved" follower only came about after the curved 30-round mags were introduced, and only then because the early black followers were traced to a jamming problem in Full-Auto M-16 fire.

I have 15 or 20 1970's era 30-round GI mags that still have the orginial black followers, and they continue to work perfectly in my Colt AR's.

IMHO: Unless your AR-15 is full-auto, or out of whack some other way, "improved" followers are just another way to get your money!
