Does anyone know if handheld stun guns and stun batons are effective (don't confuse with air tasers)? I've found a few posts online (other online sites) who say that they conducted experiments on themselves or others to find out. The home experiments that I did see, they all said the stun guns did no more than cause pain, but didn't make it so the person couldn't move. For example, the University of Oklahoma Police Department's self-defense website said that the police chief had the department get the most powerful stun gun they could find. He held it right below his jaw for 60 seconds and it didn't immobolize him. I have one of those 3 inch 950,000 volt stun guns (I think the million volt stun guns are the only thing more powerful) that arch. I haven't tried it on myself, but one of my roommates who basically could be a body builder begged me to use it on him yesterday. I put it into his arm, where he had clothes separating the stun gun from his skin, and I could hear a sizzling noise. After a split second of it being on his arm, he jump really far and quickly, then took some steps in the other direction. He said that it felt like a really intense indian burn and it left a mark on his arm (it went right through his clothes). He said that it was the surprise in the feeling, not the actual pain, that made him jump. Does anyone know if stun guns and batons can stun or even immobolize the population as a whole, obviously excluding immune individuals, if you can hold it to someone long enough?

Kevin,
How did it feel?

Nick,
I have one of those big 8" 900,000 volt stun gun but never get to use it yet..well, I almost did one time when a big neighborhood punk wants to bully a senior citizen. I went over there and this big punk focuse all his attention on me soo I pulled my 8" stun gun and pulled the trigger twice to make sure its working but when he saw the spark/loud crackling noise he was running soo fast away from me..run forrest run... :neener: that was funny ..I was going to chase him but I said to myself that's enough traumatic event for him already..he even tripped himself in the neighborhood lawns:D . The only disadvantage in stun guns is that you have to get close to your assailant.
On the box of my stun gun..Its says Touching an assailant for less than one second will cause minor muscle contractions and have a repelling effect. Touching the assailant for one to two seconds will cause muscle spasms and dazed mental state. Touching an assailant for three to five seconds will cause loss of balance and muscle control, total mental confusion, and disorientation leaving him dazed. All effects to the assilant are temporary;the stun gun can cause no permanent harm. Under no conditions can you ever suffer a charge back to your own body so you can feel safe using this unit even if the assailant is holding on to you. Now I upgraded myself.. I bought a Taser with a laser..this one you do not need to get close you have 15 feet of safe distance and more punch knockdown for sure and comes with intimidating laser ;) you can also use it like a regular stun gun if you miss your target by taking out the old catridge and using the expose probes..on mine I have the quick reloader :) haven't use it yet though,no memorable moments to share yet :) ;) :D
I haven't found a guinea pig(relatives, friend and volunteer) to try out my stun gun and my taser...oh well, maybe someday:rolleyes:
GoodLuck and be safe.

Hi Tatcic,

It felt like someone touched me with a cigarette. Not real painfull. I took the hit in the stomach, maybe the neck would have different results. Pepper spray or tasers would get my attention, but stun guns don't work on a lot of people.

A few years ago I bought a 250,000v gun to use for a potato gun. During a weekend drinking party I had to hide the thing for all the drunks because they found it hilarious to be shocking themselves all over their bodies with it. If it makes someone moderatly tipsy laugh their ass of, I wouldnt want that thing between me and some crackhead or even a well-determined person.

Tasers are great because they hit up the CNS IIRC and will stop someone immediately. A knife would be a better weapon with the same range, and high speed lead from a much longer distance would be much, much better. You might scare someone with the little spark if they've never been hit by one, but it's about the same thing as those dog training collars. If Fido can take it, so can the baddy.

The only problem with Tasers is that they are a one shot weapon. After that they become a glorified stun gun. If one of those barbs doesn't make contact you might as well beat them with the gun. I'm sure we only hear about the success of the Taser and not the times it failed for whatever reason.

Kevin,
Thanks for the input.

I can't remember one time I read an article if your buying a stun gun to go for higher volts..like 700,000 volts above..oh well, I'm happy with my memorable stun gun:D It's a keeper. It's good also that I brought the stun gun instead of my real gun/s..that's enough to scare him away..and I avoided a waste of time investigation and court hearings from shooting a punk.
I also think to always have a backup plan;plan B ( all attack has a counter;all counter has counterattack and so on..learned it from my JKD instructor). Don't rely on just one weapon;)
Take care

instead of a stun gun, have you thought about a compact telescopic baton, like an ASP?

i'd trust something like that over something electronic, you know it will work, and it gives more reach than a handheld stun gun.

that plus a can of OC spray on your belt gives you lots of options when you can't carry a handgun.

I've touched the arc on mine with my finger, hurt about as much when I touched the HT leads on my car engine :what: but the instructions that came with my SG say that you should aim at the groin area and I don't see anyone willing to test that???

I am a LEO and have taken a taser shot...taser darts immobilize for the most part...if you drive stun which is the equivilent of a stun baton it is just pain not immobilizing...oh and you get burns too!

Somebody

should take M0ntels post off this sight. I watched it and it seriously disturbed my mind:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :what: :what: :barf: :barf: :banghead: It can be classified as porn and is sickening. It should be deleted by M0ntel himself or an administrator. When it is taken away I will delete this post

The guy is in boxer shorts the whole time. I guess everyone considers something different to be porn. If it would have showed anything more I wouldnt have linked it...I'm not into looking at another man's bare accessories either. I'll add a warning for ya though.

I prefer collapsing steel batons (non-electric), FWIW. If you can take away your attacker's ability to walk, you should be able to get away.

I can take many of them and still function. I used to work around high current, high voltage RF.

I am affected at voltages of 100,000 volts or higher with a higher repetition rate than most models I've seen with good recovery. The high rate makes it hard to control muscles. I don't recall the brand name of the one that I tried but I do respect the shock. :D

Without good testing on a variety of subjects and real world feed back from the field you have to make estimates of what is 'reasonably' sub-lethal and will effect most people.

Distance Between Probes?

I am wondering if something else that may make the difference between a stun gun immobolizing and a taser immobolizing is the distance between the probes when they hit the body, besides the T wave current and wattage that a taser has? The electricity is supposed to travel from one probe to the other and anything not between the two won't be affected, like if you're hold onto someone being tasered or stun gunned. The probes on a stun gun are usually only an inch or two or three away from each other. When the probes from a taser hit its target, they're usually a foot or two feet apart. So I'm wondering if part of the reason is because the taser's electricity travels through more of the muscles? I wonder if that's one of the reasons they say that for maximum effectiveness with a taser, it's best to be such and such distance away, rather than being right on them.

I just zapped myself with a 950,000 Volt Stun Gun!

This post is for those who are wondering what it feels like to be zapped with a stun gun. Yesterday night I zapped myself with a 950,000 volt handheld stun gun (remember they have really low amperage)! That was an interesting experience! It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would, based on hearing the loud and bright arch when I would dry fire it (don't get me wrong, it still hurt). Beforehand, I thought it would feel like a razor or something sharp and painful, but the pain was much wider and less concentrated. It felt like something was flowing through me. It reminded me of one time when I was a young child and I stook metal things into an outlet and it zapped me, but the difference was with the stun gun I didn't get as much of a feeling of pulsation, but a lot more feeling of jolt! I applied it to my tricep. My arm immediately extended (tricep contracted), like it was possessed by something. I also threw the stun gun with my opposite hand, what I was using to shock myself with. It hurt, but it was kind of a cool feeling and I'm glad I did it. Then for a while afterwards, my triceps on that arm felt a little sore, like someone had hit me. I want to do it again, but am a little apprehensive about doing it again!

Yo Nick,
Your funny:D you should have video taped it or mpeg and send as a copy here in the forum:D ;) :D .
Anyway, how many second was the zapping?
Oh well, make sure you are in good health and have someone with you when you do those stunt..stay safe;)
Keep us an update..
Take care

BTW, here's the web site for the info. on taser www.taser.com

every hand held stungun ive tried was a toy and nothing more. dont use em unless your just playing around with budies. never rely on one to stop anyone. they are great fun at parties tho.

Tacticaldude, It was probably 1/2 second. I didn't apply it for to long, but I think in a real life situation the BG probably wouldn't let you apply it for too long. Even though I didn't apply it for two long, I do not think that a handheld stun gun with probes only 1" apart would immobolize a BG, but I think that it would be effective if someone's grabbing onto you and you need to get him to break the hold and a 2 second break (so that you have some space to use another weapon on the BG). Also it might depend on where you get him, since the local muscle group will contract.

A knife would be a better weapon with the same range

Than a Taser? I can't agree. A Taser will take down the target, with some stand-off distance. A knife doesn't have that range, and only effects an instant
stop if used in a lethal manner.
