A while ago at a gun show, I picked up my girlfriend a 300,000 volt stun gun (tazer without the coiled wires) for around 75 bucks. It was the best one next to the 600k volt one, but whos counting. Anyway, the guy said it would stun an attacker for 15 minutes if the charge was held on him for 8 seconds or so. Now there are different spots to hold the tazer on the attacker. (ribs being the best) The man knew what he was talking about, and even though i did alot of research, i havent been 100% convinced that she is safe with this thing. I mean, I know the tazer stops transmissions to the brain and keeps the suspect from moving under his own control. But does anyone have any information for me?

I think you meant to say that a tazer STOPS transmissions from the brain and not that it stops them to the brain.

Buy your girlfriend a stun gun, expect to be stunned with it.

So the guy said that if held against a bad guy for 8 seconds of zapping, he would be incapacitated for 15 minutes? Cool. Who is going to hold the guy still for 8 seconds while your girlfriend zaps him for 8 seconds?

FYI, tazers don't always work. Suspects yank out the leads intentionally when they get zapped and then you have a pissed suspect. In this case, no leads and so your girlfriend has to hold the electrodes against the guy. If your girlfriend can reach the guy with her unit, he can reach her.

Not only worthless against an attacker, but illegal in NJ as well.

NEW JERSEY: Illegal

New Jersey State Law. New Jersey Stat. Ann. Title 2C. New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice. Chapter 39-1. Prohibited weapons and devices.

(Section "r" summarized from Chapter 2C:39-1) "Weapon" means anything readily capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury. The term includes, but is not limited to all (4) stun guns; and any weapon or (this section refers to tear gas and has been updated in 1995) other device which projects, releases, or emits tear gas or any other substance intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or permanent injury through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air.

(t) "Stun gun" means any weapon or other device which emits an electrical charge or current intended to temporarily or permanently disable a person.

Senate, No. 2871 -- L.1985, c. 360

Senate Bill No. 2781, as amended by the Senate Law, Public Safety and Defense Committee, prohibits as a crime of the fourth degree the possession of a stun gun by any person, including a law enforcement officer. A crime of the fourth degree carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to 18 months, a fine of up to $7,500, or both. Prior to being amended the bill classified possession of a crime in the third degree. {Editor’s Note: According to Len Lawson of NJ Legislative Council, (609) 292-4625) NJ does not classify crimes in felonies versus misdemeanors. The highest crimes are in first degree on down to fourth degree. A fourth degree penalty is a serious charge and is generally considered a misdemeanor in common terms. It is however an indictable offense. A fourth degree crime does contain "a presumption of non-custodial sentencing," meaning that there is not imprisonment if there are no prior convictions. In some cases the sentencing is obviated from one’s record if there is a period of good behavior following the charge.}

The committee amended the bill to include a provision authorizing the Attorney General, at his discretion, to exempt law enforcement officers from the prohibition against possession stun guns.

The bill also was amended by the committee to include stun guns in the definition of "weapon" in paragraph r. N.J.S. 2C:39-1.

(Chapter 2C:39-1)

(h) Stun guns. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any stun gun is guilty of a crime in the fourth degree.

SUMMARY: Possession is banned of Stunning Devices in New Jersey.

If the salesman tries to tell you "it's just like the tasers the police use, except for . . . ." there's no reason to hear the rest. That's like saying a Honda is like a Corvette except that it's not. In my family, the term for this is "Just like it, only different!"

Stun Gun=Bad Idea for Girls.

Hell, I wouldn't want to use one and I'm a "well heeled" guy.

Distance is a Girls best friend (in an armed encounter that is...)

These stun guns don't allow any standoff. Your girlfriend will have to get within contact distance of her assailant to use it. Which also means she'll be in contact distance of her assailant when the juice shuts off and now the assailant is possibly very angry. They don't work on everyone (nothing does). I have never seen one with an indicator on it that allowed you to check the state of the charge. My PD tested them about 20 years ago and this was a big drawback. They are much less effective if they don't have a full charge.

All in all OC would be a better option for protection.

thanks guys. yea its a tazer, not a stun gun. and she does have good ole OC. shes from PA so that whole thing about it being illegal doesnt affect her. Im the NJ guy. i just want her to carry a nice beretta bobcat or something to that affect. but its alright, shes a streetsmart gal , im just a cautious guy.

I haven't used them or experienced them, so this is only what I've gathered from others.

If the attacker is averse to pain, stun guns, and to a greater degree tasers, may work as a pain compliance device. Neither really disables the attacker. If the hypothetical attacker isn't going to curl into a ball from the significant amount of pain (there seems to be some variation, whether it depends on the person, location, or the particular device), your girlfriend will be in trouble.

If you're stuck with a taser or packaged seasoning, they may be better than nothing. If you're not, a gun and a knife or two is a better option.
