Hey Folks,

Received this email this morning and it pretty much p*ssed me off.
Does anyone have anymore info on this, or know if it's even true?

Vietnam Veterans Association
By Dick Forrey

We asked our local Target store to be a sponsor
of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall during our
spring recognition event. We received back a reply
from Target management that "veterans do not meet
our area of giving". We only donate to the areas of
the arts, social actions, gay and lesbian causes,
and education."

My thought: If the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Wall and veterans in general, do not meet their
donation criteria, something is wrong at Target.

We were not asking for thousands of dollars, not
even hundreds, but simply
sponsorship of an endorsement for a "memorial
remembrance."

As follow-up, I E-mailed the corporate
headquarters and their response was the same.

Personally, I will NOT be purchasing anything at
Target Stores again. If the Vietnam Veteran or
Veterans in general do not meet their area of
giving, then why should I, as a Vietnam veteran,
spend my hard earned money in their stores?

Please pass this on to as many people as you
know.

Sincerely,
Veterans Helping Veterans

PS: Target will also not allow the Marines to
collect for Toys For Tots during the
holidays.

Are all Target stores owned by the corporation? Or, are some of them locally franchised? I find it hard to believe that such idiocy would be corporate policy. Most major-corporation HQ folks are a lot smarter than that--or oughta be, given their knowledge of K-Mart's problems. In today's pro-military societal climate, such a negative attitude is tantamount to economic suicide.

I'd look for more info, myself.

Man, I thought we killed this one months ago. I guess we should have driven a stake through it's heart and bried it in a crossroads at the dark of the moon.
Fortunately I keep Snopes in my "Links" bar...

http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.php

Short story: they contacted the local stoer, which is not authorized to give them the support they were seeking. They did not contact corprate. Corporate COULD have given them the support they were seeking, but they didn't.

Additional statement by the Veternas of Foreign Wars:
Although there has been a resurgence of patriotism and support for our nation’s veterans, there have been various messages posted on the Internet that would lead people to believe that corporate America, specifically retail department stores, are falling short in supporting our nation's veterans.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars would like to remind all that the Internet culture weaves rumors and misinformation. Simply put, don't believe everything you read. For example, an e-mail message urging veterans to boycott Target has been circulating on the Internet because a solicitation request to support "The Moving Wall" was denied.

Target has a long-held corporate policy regarding donations. And in all fairness, Target contributes more than $2 million weekly to charitable causes and is one of the corporate sponsors for the 2003 tour of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Fund's "The Wall That Heals." "The Wall That Heals" is a traveling Vietnam Veterans memorial and museum that has a strong educational component for schools and serves to honor all our veterans.

Thanks for the link.

I was finding it hard to believe any major store would make that kind of comment in print.
I never even thought about the Urban Legends website, but I knew someone on here would have more info.
Thanks Again

D.W. Drang,

Snopes is a great resource, and I use them frequently to shut down e-mail chains, but they do often oversimplify issues and tend to rush to judgement a bit themselves.

In this case it is a very clear fact that Target does have a policy that limits its Grants program to Education, Arts, and and Family Violence. Does Target support "The Wall That Heals"? Yes. But they do so because of its educational content.

Does this make Target a bad company per se? That is for you to decide. Personally, I don't plan to stop shopping there for this reason.

I'm just pointing out that just as we should not rush to judge a company based on one e-mail, we also should not rush to dismiss an issue simply because Snopes has judged it "false".

Snopes has its own agenda (not sure what it is exactly....), and in my experience has frequently mis-represented or oversimplified the facts of a situation in order to dismiss it off hand.

My opinion and worth every penny you paid for it... ;)

Lee.

P.S. Don't just trust me, go to http://target.com/common/page.jhtml?content=target_cg_non_qualifying_results&_requestid=65675 and see Target's policy for yourself....

OMG send that to me so i can get $100 to everyone i send it too!!! I'll be floatin in the money oh yeah!

Target sucks as a store IMO anyways, i've only been in the one here and it didn't have any guns, camo, guncessories, or Dale Earnhardt Sr. stuff, which means it's poopy

Target as a company may or may not be anti Veteran, but the Dayton famliy controls the company.

Dayton family scion Mark Dayton is now Senator Dayton from Minnesota.

His position on guns?

Taken from here .
Bolding Mine

I support the Second Amendment and will continue my support as Senator. I support current law, including the ban on assault weapons and I support the federal law, including background checks on all purchasers of firearms. I do believe that trigger locks should be provided on new handguns, and I believe those who sell guns at gun shows should be subject to the same requirements as other firearm dealers.

Supports Licensing of Handgun Owners if the law would guarantee that adults without criminal convictions will be issued such licenses. Favors such a law as a law enforcement tool

Supports Registration of handguns: “terms of sale†registration for future handgun purchases and re-sales. Opposed retroactive registration.
Supports Minimum Product Safety Standards for the manufacture of hand guns
Supports closing the gun show loophole and requiring background checks of gun show buyers.

Despite his claims this man is no friend of the second amendment, and since he financed his campaign out of his own pockets (read: Target profits), I won't shop at Target at all.
