"I wanted one of those from the day i first heard of it."

Today is that day for me!!! I want one! 357 mag is my fav round. I only have 3 revolvers in 357 mag. I need my 2nd auto loader...now in 357 mag! Woo Hoo!

I have one of the newly released pistols and love it. It's the most fun to shoot pistol that I own.

This is my Coonan next to my Baer TRS. The Coonan looks (and is) bigger, but doesn't really feel that way.

The link below is a video of me shooting it at the range a couple of months back. I was using Fiocchi 142gr loads. It has a little more bark with a full power 158gr load.

Coonan .357 Auto

Nice pistol but you would think for a gun at that cost it would have an equipment rail underneath. How much more would that have cost in the original tooling? It would have put it up with the times.

I was ready to purchase one until I saw it didn't.

Actually, 1911 shooters and other traditionalists tend to look at it the other way, in some cases paying more to have such rails REMOVED.

Relatively few folks who own railed handguns tend to put anything on the rail 90% of the time anyway, and next to no holsters will fit a gun with a rail-mounted object installed (shoot, it isn't easy to find a 1911 holster that will even fit with a bare rail), so they become more weight and snaggy edges, to no purpose.

+1 on the "no rail" attitude. Not against them, I just have no desire for one, and no need that would be filled by one at this time.

If I want a laser, I'll buy a guide-rod one... If I want a flashlight, I don't want to have to point the gun at anything I want illuminated.

Love the gun though, but I'm a ham-handed galoot.... would love to see one in .45 colt as well, but I won't hold my breath.

What percentage of the parts are interchangeable with a 1911?

Straight from the FAQ page on their website
Q: How many parts are interchangeable between the .357 Magnum Automatic and a standard 1911?

A: There are 18 parts that are direct replacements:

* Hammer & Pin
* Hammer Strut & Pin
* Sear, & Pin
* Sear Spring
* Disconnector & Pin
* Thumb Safety
* Plunger Tube, Pins (Front & Rear), and Spring
* Barrel Bushing
* Recoil Plug
* Grip Screws
* Grip Bushings

There are 6 parts that require some modification:

* Firing Pin Stop
* Grip Safety
* Recoil Spring
* Ejector
* Recoil Spring Tube
* Sights

I have considered one, they are pretty nice looking rather higher end firearms in my opinion. A little on the expensive side for me. I'm not crazy about the 60 buck magazines either. Its still on my want one list tho for sure.

When you think about it $1300 for a cool 1911 isn't that bad. It would be nice if they had a commander or officers model though.

There was a 4" version of the early guns that was known as the "Cadet". I've seen talk that it may reappear in the not to distant future.

from the pics and reports i've seen of the coonans field stripped on 1911forum, the quality is less than impressive.

Based on my personal sample of one, I'd put the quality on par with Colt. The thumb safety could be a little better (it feels a little flimsy to me) and the grip safety could be fitted better. There a little things that I could nitpick over, but overall it's a great gun and the trigger is better than any factory Colt I've ever handled.

I don’t need to quote others and annotate in my post. I see a lot of that in these forums.

I'm a Traditionalist as well and tend not to look the other way. For the price of the gun it would have been a nice option to have, even though you may only use it in a limited capacity. If you don't feel comfortable pointing a gun where you may have a need to illuminate then more training is needed. As lasers may be cool they hinder good instinct shooting skills.

There is a vendor that sells a holster to fit a wide variety of pistols with light for a nice price. The Coonan is a nice looking piece.

I saw a link in a later post…Coonan vs. water jug…a .357 out of a snub-nose will do the same thing.

I think you're missing Sam's point. Basically, rails are unused by most and often look like a cheap marketing gimmick to many shooters. For a gun of this price they expect them to NOT be there.

I saw a similar post a while back on a higher end 1911 where someone commented that it was ridiculous that a gun of that price range didn't include 3-dot sights. Same thing - most experienced shooters (strongly) dislike them, so it's not that they left out a feature at a high price range - it's that they removed a much derided item at that price point.

How would you feel if you bought a Mercedes that came with factory curb-feelers and neon lights underneath? Personally, I'd be pretty ticked that after spending that much money on a car I had to spend more to have a shop rip that stuff back out.

mgmorden I would know the options on a Mercedes before I purchased one.

Many experienced shooters also like rails. I always keep an open mind as to the backgrounds of experienced shooters.

As you know sight upgrades are available from Coonan, the rail could of as well for those willing to pay for it.

Another missed point about flashlights and rails.

It's not that I'm uncomfortable with the trigger control inherent in a mounted light...

It's the 99% chance that the person who will be illuminated will be under the age of 9, or my mother in law.

If we experience a full scale military invasion of the mainland US, I'll have a use for the rails I do have.
