Are there any shooting gadets that you thought were stupid...

I'm not scared...or proud. I think a "Butt-Buddy" refers to a leather holster-thingy that hangs on your belt and you stick the buttstock of a long rifle in it...making it easy to carry barrel pointing up.

i am with Dr Rob on the Boresnake, have one for every caliber I shoot now and the thumb saver for loading my S&W M-41 mags.

19 Year old checking in...

The guns were designed to be a functional weapon system. They don't need all this CRAP added on to the design.

These tacticool people are what is ruining the world of firearms, and putting our hobby at risk.

Seriously, where are you people getting this tacticool hatred stuff from in this thread? This has nothing to do with hanging every piece of tacticool crap off a rifle.

Its about any item used for shooting that you once thought was stupid, but found out it was actually useful or cool.

Just because I have an ACOG, which is just another scope, and used a bipod grip from a trade to help steady my rifle doesn't mean I have a 50 other things on a rail. I don't like quad rails. They're heavy and outrageously expensive. However I do like some rail space. It allows for enhancing a firearm. But I digress.
ENOUGH.

Boresnakes for sure.

The BAD lever is one thing that I was very skeptical about at first but realized that it really makes operating an AR much more easy and intuitive. At least for me anyway.

Bore snakes. Another believer here, with snakes in multiple calibers.

Reticle Leveler for installing scopes. Thought it was unnecessary, but once I bought one, changed my opinion. It's a great addition.

Butler Creek flip-up scope covers. Again, thought they were silly until I bought my first set for a hunting rifle. Absolutely sold on 'em the first day it rained.

I didn't see any reason to mount an optic over the barrel (scout mount) until my eyes got old and I couldn't see iron sights. I finally mounted a Primary Arms Micro Dot on a UTG hand guard. I should have done that years ago. I can see the dot and the target. I have retrained myself to shoot with both eyes open so I have a much better field of view. I'm currently converting all my long guns to this type of configuration. I wish there was a way to do it on a Glock.

I haven't read the entire thread so perhaps this is a duplicate post but the stupidest gun gadget I've ever heard of is "The shoulder thing that goes up"!:D

I'll agree with magazine loading tools...thought they were completely useless. As I quickly learned when trying to load 32 round 9mm Uzi mags, I need one one.

Now I love 'em.

This sounds familiar. Kind of like:

"These idiots wanting to make boats out of steel are ruining the world of sailing!"

or:

"These automobile enthusiasts are ruining the transportation industry! How are the horses supposed to move goods with all these durned cars screaming up and down the roads?"

How about:

"Why would anyone want a metal airplane when canvas works just fine?"

Yeah. Crazy tacticool idiots. How dare they experiment and try new things! Stupid innovators.

Compensated rifles, pistols, and revolvers...until I got a S&W 329 PD (.44 Mag), then I was all in. If I didn't have that thing compensated I'd still be able to shoot it, but it would be just plain painful. Having it compensated and changing out the grips have made it very shootable.

Coatings of various sorts are another one...until I took my Robarized 870 (I bought it that way) to S/E Alaska about 5 times. That particular area of Alaska is a huge rain forest and salt water is everywhere. The folks I go with haven't done anything to their respective shotguns. Guess whose gun hasn't developed any rust. Mine :)!

Night sites. I couldn't think of a reason I'd need them, until I started using them, now I'm a big fan, especially for CCW. It's not a deal breaker if they don't have them, but it sure is nice if / when you need to acquire a decent site picture.

Rails on pistols, then I mounted a light / laser on a G22. The light is good for, well, lighting up the place and "blinding" an assailant. I've also developed a fondness for green-pulsating lasers. Having that dot on your chest or in your eyes is definitely intimidating.

I'm sure there are others that will come to mind, but those are the top useful "gimmicks" based on my experience.

Thanks,

Hmm, haven't bought much for my guns, but I have to say recoil pads you put on the stock of (in my case) shotguns.

I got my shotgun in the middle of winter, and started shooting boatloads of trap. As in some sundays over 200 rounds. What I didn't realize was that because it was winter, I had on my big Carhartt, and when I did my first long day in just a shirt, holy smokes did my shoulder let me know the next day.

Can we stay on topic please? The OP was looking for things that look goofy, but turn out to be pretty handy, NOT people hating on what they consider completely useless.

I always thought bayonets/knives mounted to pistols were pretty dumb. If you get close enough to use it, you should just shoot...If you're out of ammo, use your hands or at least pull out your own knife...lol pistol mounted knives, get the hell outta here with that garbage.

+1. When I bought a Stoegar Cougar in .40 S&W I found the uplula loader a valued necessity!! It also helps a little with a couple of other guns.

Hey there Carter, I got your back on this one. I'm probably one the few law abiding citizens with the worst of luck, having been kidnapped, robbed, and more. It was at the age of 12 that a handgun saved my life, that was 43 years ago, and it hasn't gotten any better! I'll leave the details out, as it could take a lot of time to elaborate.

Not all mag loaders are created equal. The HKS lever-type loader is really handy for hi-cap pistol mags. And honestly, after getting one I kind of felt like "why didn't I think of this before?"

Tipton swabs. It's a giant re-usable Q-tip on a stiff metal wire. Strangely (almost like they designed it that way folks) fits the inside of most auto pistol slides, rifle receivers etc so you can give a really good scrubbing. You can wash them out over time too. Not an essential product, but a VERY useful one.

I'm just replying to just the first part of your question (Are there any shooting gadets that you thought were stupid...).

Well yes, now that you mention it, I think hanging all kinds of crap off of AR-15 is ridiculous. Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm just an old fart but I hate the way a lot of people think that they have to hang FOUR Picatinny rails on every AR-15 and then see how many gimmicks they can hang on it! I think it's obscene the way that they try hang 10 pounds of crap off of a 6 1/2 pound rifle! If I need a bipod, the original cloths-pin type clip-on bipod works wonderfully and is completely out of my way and doesn't affect my POI when I'm not using it. And I don't need a flashlight on my AR-15, Thank You! I'm not planning on going into a cave to hunt bats! And having a flashlight on your gun is about the best way that I can think of to target yourself to the bad guys! AND don't get me started about people that remove the original carry handle then turn around put on a Picatinny rail so they can mount another carry handle! I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the idea. I like the original SP-1, and with the possible except of the more easily adjusted A2 sites, I don't want anything else added to it.

Sorry but YOU asked. :)

Interesting you point out that you aren't answering his actual question, but then allege that's what he asked. but then again, the rest of that made as much sense.

This whole statement made my head hurt. Here goes...

So you don't want people to hang 10 pounds off a 6.5 lb rifle, should they only do that on 12 lb rifles?

It's amazing you reference your clothespin bipod not affecting your point of aim when you aren't using it, but completely overlook that it does when you ARE using it. Those picatinny rails that you quake in fear of are likely free floated, which will ACTUALLY keep your POI in place.

I guess you were trying to be amusing, implying that lights on rifles are for caving, but personally I would like to be able to see what I am preparing to shoot, as opposed to firing blindly, which seems to be your intent. Or maybe you're just hoping that anything that happens will only happen in the middle of a sunny day, outside. Either way, you sound like a danger to yourself and/or someone around you.

And yes, it might be you and you might be an old fart.:D

I am not a fan of (even pressure activated) flashlights on AR-15's or assault rifles. I know I'll catch flack for it, but "FOR ME" I just can't stand it. Its weights the gun down and seems pointless when I can just get a night scope or something.

Welcome to THR.

I don't follow your logic. A light will weigh the gun down, but a "night scope" won't? Pointless? How is illuminating what you are preparing to destroy, as well as some periphery pointless? I suspect you havent used night vision before, so let me help you experience it. Go get a paper towel tube and then look down it and through a window screen into a room that is dimly lit with a green lightbulb. Or, you can bathe your target in a nice white light and be able to see other things around you.

.

I'll have to look into these. I actually use q-tips for deep cleaning, having to pay close attention so that I don't leave half a tip in the deep recesses of an autoloader.
