Did initial degreasing of a new batch of Suomi drums in dishwasher as I always do. Did not notice heat dry got switched off. Will need some elbow grease . . . may need refinishing :(

What are good choices for spray on finishes for drum internals and externals?

As a DIY'er, I've had success with Brownells spray-n-bake Gun Kote finishes. I've used them on pistol frames & slides where they perform exactly as promised. Easy to use as long as you do a good job prepping & degreasing the metal first.

If you don't want to spend too much, commercial paints such as Rustoleum will work fine. remember, they were formulated to be used on engine blocks.
 
You know what, I had a rattle can of ceramic high temp brake caliper paint that I was so impressed with how thin it went on and did not drip even with a second coat (my rattle can technique seems to be far from perfect). I ended up using the rest of the can on a rusty utility trailer after having to reweld the fender back on. It still looks great years later in full sun and I did not even prep the rust. Perhaps I will give that a try on my drums.

Hmmmm....you degrease your mags in your dishwasher ???

Been married long ?? My wife would beat me with those clean mags !! :D mike
 
I am a widower. The transgression will probably be forgiven by the time we meet again.

The Suomi KP/-31 was a first generation (which means very high quality and very expensive) sub machine gun used by Finland from the mid '30s though the late '80s (with the tank corps at least) as well as many other countries including Israel.

All kinds of custom 9mm uppers (automatic and semi) use them now because so many drums were made that there is a glut of them. Some estimate that they would cost $350 to make now.

Here is the picture of the Suomi (on right) and the Russian PPSh-41 copy (left).

The brown turned out to be superficial surface rust and came right off with a little Jemon Joy. I finished the job the dishwasher almost completed with some brake cleaner. For degreasing the spring assembly, I boil them in a sauce pan with lemon Joy and some trisodium phosphate (finding real TSP is a challenge these days--one of the several "TSP" brands Home Depot sells is still real for the time being). Looks like I do not need to refinish them at all.

Quite possibly with all original parts except (maybe) the sear and firing pin :D. Those guns were built. --From a single forging, that is ;). Supposedly the finest 9mm drums and hi-cap stick mags there are (not as much love for the coffin mags, for whatever reason).

You know you can't not post a picture of the gun this goes to, right? ;) It'd be like me waltzing in and goin' "gee, I just can't seem to get the spots off my Vickers belt..." :D

I could post a picture of the upper :) Hopefully I will have the lower in a few more weeks--the reason I am getting my drums ready now. Expect a post in the NFA subforum :D

This is a Gen I Lage Max-31A. Mine with look simillar but Gen II-eyer.

I like to buy and restore, sharpen old hand planes, I use a rust remover followed by a bath in denatured alcohol so there is no flash rusting.

I ran a 1.0 Geo Metro block through the dishwasher and confessed later. I suffered no ill effects or harm.....

Neat stuff!
 
Dishwasher? You want the grease to clog up the pipes? Auto shop's parts washer is better and there's no wife to scream at you.

BTW, I know because decades ago my brother (17 at the time) washed his motorcycle engine in the dishwasher.
