I've been arguing on another board for RKBA and it's been an uphill battle. I believe in what I'm arguing about but it's hard when they post streched and untrue examples (example: " there are 22 times more illegal examples of shooting in the US than legal shootings " or some other horsepucky like that).

So if you guys have any good blurbs, it'd be appreciated.

Which forum? Maybe we'll all go register there tonight and bombard them with threads about RKBA... :D

Trust me on this. No one has ever changed their point of view over a brilliant BBS dialog. The only thing I have seen that will change an anti gunner's world view, is being up close and personal with their very own mugger. Golly, they get religion then :)

How about some pro-gun quotes from the founding fathers?

"Earliest Pro-Gun Quotes:
This collection of important quotes are from authors pre-dating the framers of our great country. These works were no doubt read by many of our founding fathers and most likely helped shape our U.S. Constitution and form of Government."

"Important Quotes on Guns, Liberty, Government, Militia & Crime:
These collections of important quotes are designed to educate people on the real nature of the gun control debate. These quotes are helpful for debates, research papers, and letters to the editor.
The quotes are listed by category and whenever possible, a hyperlink to the quote in context is included."

I don't think that's true because I've seen it happen. However, I've never seen a bunch of people registering at a board to "show them the light" working.

I didn't say we'd show them the light. I said we'd bombard them with threads. :D

Attempting to reason with leftist extremists is rather like teaching a cat to whistle: that cat's not going to learn to whistle, but might be amused a little while—or not, as the case may be.

Approx 11,000 non-suicide deaths by firearm per year. Divided by 22 is 500.

So that jackass claims that there are only 500 legal defensive uses of firearms a year in the whole of the US? The American Rifleman magazine lists 7 or 8 incidents every month. That's around 100 cases right there. Just find 400+ more on the 'net by scouring newspapers major cities, which should be easy.

Then show that idiot he is completely wrong and tell him if he tries to unlawfully take your property he will become one of those statistics.

I like this one:

Never argue with an idiot. A passerby may not be able to tell the difference.

So we get to whoop 'em upside the head with our sock-full of lime green jello called 'superior logic'?
Me likey!!
And if that don't work, hit 'em upside the head with a 'clue x 4'. :D

stats.....lies....and the truth

As always, stats can be presented in ways to apparently support any given point. Especially when the stat is a statistically insignificant subset of the whole.

For instance, the "22 to 1" stat is meaningless, even if it were true, because not every legal (or illegal) use of a firearm result in shots being fired. It could be 100, or 1000 to 1, and still not mean anything as far as the larger argument is concerned : illegal -vs- legal uses of firearms.

Now, when you add up all of the legal uses of firearms for any given year, I'd bet you'd be talking in the hundreds of millions, just in the US. And by uses, I don't simply mean defensive uses, but any uses. I use my gun all the time, but it's never hurt anything but paper and backstops. (Well, and the webbing of my hand from hammer bite...)

Drunk drivers use to kill a lot more people than they do today. The reduction is not due to making alcohol illegal, but in the education about the consequences of drinking and driving, the creatation of laws holding people responsible for the actions of drinking and driving, and the enforcement of those laws.

Yeh, we tried to outlaw alcohol once, but that didn't work. In fact, most would agree that it only made matters worse.

I had some other examples, but I'm getting tired and can't remember them. :) Oh well...

Carry On!

Ask them to consider this: Take any restriction you want to apply to firearm ownership and apply it the right of free speech, or freedom of religion.

If the Bill of Rights is just crap, then it provides no protection for any other freedom. Can't just pee on one section, you'lll splatter everywhere.

But, it is an undeniable fact that if you take an enclosed society and REMOVE ALL firearms, that environment instantly becomes safe and an utter paradise. A good example is Prison--safest place in the world to be is in the gun free general population.

Good analogy!

My experience=>Some discussion boards are good, others less so. In fact, some discussion boards can't handle discussion at all. A few have what I call regulars and mods that have a pre-conceived opinion and will not tolerate anything else or dissenting opinion from the established norm. When they are confronted with facts against their pre-conceived opinion, they will either ignore the facts, or penalize the person that presented the facts. In fact, some boards have perfected this technique, driving away or evicting undesired opinion. If you persist, the regulars on the board, along with the mod, will use a variety of techniques to devalue the dissenting opinion, up to and including hounding you on the board and off...

Thus, discussion boards are what you make them... be careful though because some folks don't want to change their pre-conceived opinion for any reason!

There is no shortage of lefty boards with extremists onboard that cannot handle intelligent discussions of gun rights; Democrat Underground and its stepchild Discussion Boards are representative of this. Indeed, they refuse to accept any gun discussion wherein a strict conservative understanding of the 2nd Amendment is concerned. If you press it, expect to be labeled an extremist for your views, or called a racist by some as a way they use to devalue your opinion.

I know. But since he brought it up, I'd like to see it. No harm in taking a look.
