I'm looking for help appraising and identifying this Arisaka rifle. I think it's a bring back from the war era and then sporterized. So far I think it's a 6.5mm T38. The only marks are in the two photos that show them, the "Mum" and the serial number with a factory cartouche. The stock is missing the butt plate. It has a 24" barrel.

Any help in value and ID appreciated.

It was JapaneseType 38 in a previous life, now its a deer rifle in 6.5

You will do OK getting 100-150$ for it, simply because ammo is almost impossible to find.

Prehapse a passing collector can tell you the arsenal it was made in and its series in manufacture.

Here is everything you need to know about Arisaka markings.

If the barrel has good rifling you have a very accurate rifle. The Arisaka's are hard on brass but I reload for mine as they are fun to shoot. The intact Mum does indicate a wartime pick up but the rear sight would indicate something other than a front line rifle. Those type of sights were on rifles issued to home defense guards and for training.

As .455_Hunter said, the ammo is not cheap, and in its military configuration, with the intact Mum, it would fetch a higher price to a collector. I have both, a 6.5 and a 7.7 Arisaka. Pre-war and early wartime production rifles were very well made and the actions are very strong. I remember reading once years ago that someone took a 6.5 and tried to purposely destroy it by over loading with powder. They badically filled the entire case with a modern powder. The barrel threaded itself off of the action. But the action itself stayed intact.
