Contemplating acquiring an AK from ARS in Arizona. Anyone done business with them in the past? Do they have a good reputation?

Thank you everyone.

I have done lots of business with him for HK parts. Always shipped quickly and never had any issues.

Crotchety? I dunno, just didn't seem like he had time to visit but he always answered my questions.

Prices were not the best I've found but he always seemed to have what I needed in stock where others didn't so.....

There are other options that don't come with the baggage associated with the attitude that ARS throws in at no extra charge. After the way I was treated on the phone by him, if he were the last gunsmith on earth, I'd pick up a shop manual and give it a go in my garage before dealing with him.

They refinished my P228 for me about eight years ago. I have been extremely happy with it since then, and I remember nothing but a pleasant experience.

Venture with confidence. +1 to ARS.

in terms of AK's they are probibly some of the best put togather around, parts quality will of coarse be unchanged, and he charges a little high for the ammount of labor involved. But it's done probibly as good as it can be.

He always has a table in the local Crossroads gun shows, and his work seems to be top-notch. I'd say he definitely knows his stuff, but his manner can rub some people the wrong way.

His manner does more than rub, he can be openly hostile. Tell him you have a Hesse-based FAL some time (or that, gasp of all gasps, it runs fine).

Well let's be fair here lol.. If you DO have a Hesse receiver FAL that is reliable you are in a small group.

(I know you have one that does work, I've remember a thread about it)

I do not have one presently, but I did have one and it did work. Now, I'm as big a fan of Hesse as anyone else here, meaning not a fan at all. But, converse with him about it and you will get a list of obscenities, including about how dumb a person would be to buy one. He does not mince words, which can be a good thing, but he also can be combative and belligerent towards potential customers. And, tell me, just how does having a Hesse receiver affect attaching a muzzle device????? Evidently it did.

In any case, you will note that I have been fair with my description of him. He can be crotchety but he knows his stuff. That, my friend, is being far kinder to him than he can often be towards others.

I trust myself more than anyone else when it comes to building guns for me.

However, in terms of quality of work, if I was going to have someone else build one for me, Mark Graham would be up near the top of my list...
