Beebe Asked to Clarify Gun Law
July 5, 2003 - Posted at 8 :19 a.m. CDT
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --Attorney General Mike Beebe has been asked to clarify a new state law allowing permit holders to carry concealed weapons into parks and restaurants.
North Little Rock city attorney Paul Suskie questions whether Arkansas criminal code already prohibits firearms in city parks. He says if so, that would negate the need for the city to post signs announcing a ban. The law passed this spring gave cities the ability to ban concealed guns.
Suskie says that under Arkansas code it's unlawful for anyone to carry a weapon ``in any publicly owned building or facility.'' Facilities include municipally owned or maintained parks.
The North Little Rock City Council last month asked the city Parks and Recreation Commission to post signs prohibiting permit holders from carrying firearms into city parks.
A public hearing will be August 18th.
