Beebe Asked to Clarify Gun Law

July 5, 2003 - Posted at 8 :19 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --Attorney General Mike Beebe has been asked to clarify a new state law allowing permit holders to carry concealed weapons into parks and restaurants.

North Little Rock city attorney Paul Suskie questions whether Arkansas criminal code already prohibits firearms in city parks. He says if so, that would negate the need for the city to post signs announcing a ban. The law passed this spring gave cities the ability to ban concealed guns.

Suskie says that under Arkansas code it's unlawful for anyone to carry a weapon ``in any publicly owned building or facility.'' Facilities include municipally owned or maintained parks.

The North Little Rock City Council last month asked the city Parks and Recreation Commission to post signs prohibiting permit holders from carrying firearms into city parks.

A public hearing will be August 18th.

The law passed this spring gave cities the ability to ban concealed guns.

Need clarification on this please.

Legislation passed to allow carry in parks and restaurants, earlier.

In restaurants there was no restriction as to alcohol sales (eg 51 % like some states). Restaurants could, with proper signage indicate No CCW just as any other business may do so.

NO firearms in parks was part of old law...the revision was to allow CCW in parks.

I don't recall the quote above being part of the deal.

I do know NLR wants to sell booze in public parks and passed the morning after the ballywho about banning CCW in NLR parks. Central AR Klinton-ite politics suck big time. LR is waiting to see what happens with NLR.

They (NLR) didn't want CCW in parks because ...drug dealers doing business were carrying guns or suspected of doing so. So the rationale was to put up NO CCW in parks so there would be no guns in parks :scrutiny:

I have no problem with people drinking, just smelled like get the guns out so we can sell booze type of thing. Characteristic of this bunch.

So pony glass bottle or Big boy can for weapon in park...ballistics, fps, TKO...forget it-- ain't going to the park.
