Cashier Pulls Gun on Would-Be Robber

MORGANTON - Some people may call Bonnie Christie a brave woman.

On Sunday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m., while working at the Country Crossroads convenient store on U.S. 64, a man walked in, pointed a gun at Christie and demanded money.

Christie didn’t clean out the cash register, though. Instead, she grabbed a gun and pointed it at the armed man.

“I told him, ‘I’ll shoot you too,’” Christie said. “I think he tried to get a bullet in the chamber of his gun but the bullet jammed. When he realized he couldn’t (fire his gun) he ran out of the store.”

The suspect got into a car, which was parked behind the store, with another man and drove away.

Christie got the tag number on the car and reported it to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Becky Brendle said the two suspects were picked up in McDowell County several hours later.

Thomas C. Mauk, 20, of 130 Providence Road, Marion, and Christopher Lee Cannon, 27, of 2041 U.S. 70 East, Apartment A, Marion, were both charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, Brendle said.

After the two suspects were taken into custody, Christie wonder if she did the right thing.

“I really didn’t think about being scared,” Christie said. “It happened so fast. I didn’t have time to think. But after I think about it for a while, I wonder what was I thinking.”

Which LFI courses did she take? How many courses at FrontSight or Thunder Ranch? What was her speed at tac reload drills? ;)

It's called refusing to be a victim.

Two more oxygen thieves off the streets...but they're still burning oxy.

Very brave! I guess she would be more calm than me, if I had seen him try to fire the gun, I would have pulled the trigger. Glad she came out safe, and hope the throw the book and anything else they can at the scum!

Brave ? no dumb. When a BG points a gun at you ,you should never engage in conversation , just shoot !!

She's pretty lucky to be alive. Pulling a gun when someone's already got one pointed at you isn't really a great idea...

Everything worked out OK - and that's good.

BUT - she got really, really lucky because the moronic orifice between the gluteal muscles didn't even have his gun loaded.

Put into the same situation how would y'all have reacted?

Personally - given that I could get my weapon out and pointed at the guy while he just stood there (not a given and why I say she was really lucky) I wouldn't have told him "I'll shoot you too". I'd have just pulled the trigger.

This incident is proof positive of the old saying that GOD protects the stupid and fools.

Edited: Jeez numerous responses while I'm inputting mine - yuuze guyz are quick...

The bad guy got the drop on her and she got lucky. Had he loaded the pistol prior to entering I think the outcome would of been a bit different.

I still cant understand why someone would waste thier time robbing a gas station. If your gonna risk going to jail for armed robbery, why not make it worth your time and hit something that has boo koo dollars instead of a fist full of 20's

See, he actually intentionally left the chamber empty. That way, when he went in and started demanding the money, if our heroic chasier didn't comply, he could "rack the slide" for intimidation factor just like the movies! :D

I think he tried to get a bullet in the chamber of his gun but the bullet jammed. When he realized he couldn’t (fire his gun) he ran out of the store.

I wonder whether that might have been the old .38 special into 9 millimeter trick.

The criminal is lucky he didn't die on the spot.

In this circumstance she should have shot, she's very lucky to be alive, although the BG sounds like mental case. Unless it was Barney Fife and he couldn't get his one bullet loaded. ;)

Very brave woman.

Very lucky woman.

Like everyone else said, if I pull my weapon after the BG has already drawn his at me, I'm pulling the trigger - no questions asked, no statements made (except to the police afterwards).

However, if the BG has the drop on me, I'd pull the entire cash drawer out and hand it to him. It'll keep his hands busy while I reach for my gun.

If he takes the drawer and runs, that's fine. He gets someone elses money and I stay alive to tell the tale. If he drops the drawer (no pun intended), I drop a couple Hydra-Shoks into him.

BTW Boat, nice clip there. Goes to prove it CAN be done.

Yes, impressive clip. But the BGs mistake in that was he didn't keep adequate space between him and the guy he was threatening. A bullet will still work 10' further back ;)

BTW, that's kinda how we were taught to defend our "arms length" confrontation. Good to see it work in regular speed. Nice shooting from the hip too

From what I can tell, it looks like the GG didn't even have 10' to respond in. Also, since the first BG's gun is already pointed at the GG, I think he made a wise decision to wait until he could deflect the gun to draw and take the shot (any sooner, the BG might have seen him grab and decide to take the first shot).

On the 2nd BG (the one to his right), I just noticed that even under the stress of that situation, it appears he still managed "2 to the chest, 1 to the head". :)

OK, no more "hijacking" for me.

My favorite part of that clip is perp number two tugging desperately at his Mexican carried piece while death is coming full speed.

Duh, that's why I said the BGs "mistake" was to move in :p We're saying the same thing, but from opposite sides of the coin

And definitely, Number Two over there on the right needs more practice with the draw :D

While holding her gun on the BG, she just watched as he tried to load a round? Now that's just plain DUMB. She should have been shooting then, if not before. She's not only brave, she's blessed with dumb luck.
