Shooting suspects on the run-cnn

From the story:
After waiting several hours, officers tried to flush out the men with tear gas, and later they rammed the hut with an armored vehicle. By then, no one was inside, but police found two bunkers filled with weapons and military-type gear.

Ooooo, 'military-type gear', and the police in this situation followed the typical alarming trend

:(

They keep saying on the news that these two are Survivalists. As opposed to what? Cease to survivalist? That word is becoming a overused phrase to target anyone who has guns. How about these two are convicted fellons who are running from the law.

Good point.

We are all survivalists. Just in different degrees.

I'm impressed! Not even Steven Segal has TWO bunkers!

Gotta put some more work into the compound. I'm gonna have THREE bunkers and a watch tower all connected by underground tunnels!

i'm been put to shame by all this bunker planning stuff. the most logistical planning i'm currently capable of is putting together my lunch the night before to take to work...

Yes, to ram the bunker suspected of harboring 2 armed felons rather than walk up like Andy Griffith:rolleyes:

How about executing the warrant when the armed felon is away from his armed bunker/compound/foxhole or whatever? Nah, that would be easier, and safer. Much better to start a confrontation when the person is on their own well defended territory. As a bonus, the popo get to use all the nifty SWAT gear, and wear ninja suits!

As I understand it, they were going there to question them in the disappearance of the neighbors, for which they also had a warrant for the two men's arrest. They WERE walking up to the cabin, when the trooper was shot.

Note: had a warrant for their arrest. That means that they had to swear out an affidavit of Probable Cause, for review by a judge or magistrate, before going there. But they did NOT just arrive in an armored vehicle out of hand-- they tried the walking up thing first, and a cop got shot with a rifle for his trouble. Okay. Plan B. An armored car at that point is a pretty good idea, IMHO, when advancing on a couple of men who are armed and have already shot at a cop.

Why not arrest them elsewhere? Several good reasons that I can think of. First, they still need to find the missing neighbors. Time is of the essence. They need to go to where the men are, and pick them up quickly. My bet is that that warrant was also a search warrant, and where better to look than in the lair of the kidnappers? I gathered that it wasn't until AFTER the ramming and subsequent search, that they knew of the military gear and weapons cache. While of course this is going to be the highlighted part of the news story, none of what I just read in the CNN article indicates an overreaction by the police. This doesn't look like a Mt Carmel, nor Ruby Ridge. Then again, I just read a short article, from one source. Perhaps you have more information??

Very good observations Matt G. I was going to say the same thing, but you beat me to the punch. Interesting how everyone is an armchair general, or is that armchair cop.
