Florida Armed Security ???

My recently retired LEO friend plans on moving to Florida (Central Florida -- Orlando area) and wants to work part-time as an Armed Security Officer.

He has already contacted the state agency for the license forms, fingerprint cards, etc.

He needs to get what they call a D License (UNarmed security) and a G License (ARMED security).

So, can anyone suggest a good school in the Orlando area that offers armed security training so he can get his licenses?

Also, once he get his licenses, can anyone suggest a GOOD security company to work for (i.e. pay and working conditions)?

 :p :)

P.S. Is it true that armed security in Florida is limited to wheel guns only (i.e. NO semi-autos)?

Thanks...

Does anyone work as an armed security officer in Florida that could perhaps offer your insights?

Thanks...

If your friend is willing to drive to Clearwater, I can highly recommend the S2 Institute... excellent instruction, and knowledgable instructors. They also do a lot of LEO supplemental weapons training and training for executive protection. They have a website if you are interested, www.s2institute.com . I learned a lot.

Yes, it's true Florida Security Officers are limited to .38/.357 wheelguns with 4" barrels loaded with .38 special ammo only, unless the security agency you intend to work for will give you a waiver for an autoloader (9mm only) and you have to qualify with both in that case. Another fellow in my "G" class was going to work for Loomis Fargo (armored car) and was allowed to carry his Beretta 92. They also dictate the type of ammo you can carry.
Also make sure your friend is already hooked up with a company that is going to hire him after he gets his licenses, I made the mistake of trying to get the licenses first, which was fine for the "D" license (unarmed Security Officer), but the State will not accept an application for a "G" permit (armed Security Officer) without endorsement from the company that is hiring you.
I do not have any recommendations for companies to work for, as my path took me in another direction, but I'm sure there are others here who do.

Hope this helps.

Stay safe. STEVE
