I have been looking for a job for a while in Florida and I may apply for an armored car driver position. I have already read the licensing requiremnts for carrying the gun and driving the truck. I have also seen the pay scale and post of the pros and cons by people working in the field.

I know when you take a job like that there is a certain amount of risk. From reading about armored car robberies on the internet I noticed the driver gets shot a lot less than the messanger who gets out of the truck to deliver and pick up money. Sometimes a guy ambushes the messanger and takes that one money bag he is carrying. I think this is because unless the rober has high powered weapons tools or explosives it would be hard to get in the truck. A hangun wont go through the armor and even if he penetrates the truck with a high powered weapon and kills the driver the door to the money is still locked.

If any of you have worked for an armored car company as a messanger or a driver how many armored car gaurds were shot in your state per year? This includes killed or wounded. I would like to know this in order to try to asses the risk. A friend of mine was in an armed gaurd license class in Florida about 8 years ago. He was going to be an armed gaurd that gaurds a building. He said the instructor said 5 security gaurds in Florida were murdered with gunfire the year before and 3 or 4 of those were in unarmed positions. My friend did not ask him how many were wounded by gunfire.

I worked for Dunbar Armored for three years (2006-2009).

In the three years I only remember two being killed. Most theft is from the inside, and you would be damn surprised who turns out to be a thief. As for violence, one high profile incident was in Florida and another in Texas, I don't remember there being any around here. There was also an incident in NYC but the guard successfully thwarted the attack. You are correct that the messenger (often called the "hopper") faces most of the danger, the driver is a lot safer. Multi-stops in malls, airports etc. are typically more dangerous than one-stops in a strip mall.

Personally the pay was astonishingly low compared to the risks you face during the course of duty. I know people in retail who make more money than most of the driver guards.

This is just a suggestion, but look up Pinkerton Government Services and see if they have any armed security contracts in your area. Chances are the job and pay will be better.

I did Brinks in downtown Boston for three months and that was enough for me. Insane work load, unsafe tactics and area, and low pay ($11.50/hr in the year 2000). I also seriously doubt that you will only be a driver as those assignments typically went to those with seniority. If you are young and fit you will very likely end up a messenger whether they hired you to drive or not.

If memory serves, the search function for Brinks, Loomis, etc... might turn up a surprising amount of results.

Look at the numbers. There are approx. 2 million private security workers. 5 people out of 2 million is a low number percentage wise. Obviously that is little consolation to the families, but someone had to say it.
