Test Gun: Magnum Research Desert Eagle.

Barrel length: 6 inches.

Ammunition: Armscor .50 AE 300gr GDHP .

Test media: 10% Clear Ballistics Gel.

Distance: 10 feet.

Chronograph:

Velocity: 1250 fps (Per Manufacturer).

Gel Temperature 70 degrees.

I had some issues with the chronograph so I don't have any velocity on this round but the factory claims 1250fps so we will just go with that. As you could image, a 300gr bullet at 1250fps has a pretty stout recoil but the heft of the Desert Eagle at almost four and a half pounds makes it enjoyable.

Last time I checked game animals are not wearing clothing so I just did two rounds in bare gel. Both rounds penetrated 22 inches of gel. The first round had a recovered diameter of .82 inches and the second came in at .81 inches. The recovered weight came in at 300.3 and 300.4 grains.

Not a very practical pistol but a lot of fun! You can see a fireball in broad daylight! We were shooting big ol larch rounds from the firewood stack and it was impressive watching those 300 gr JHPs move the wood around, and blow chunks out the back. A quintessentially American experience!

"Makes it enjoyable," eh? Suuure. :D

The .50 AE has the unique distinction of being the only handgun round that's ever forced me to take a step backward while shooting it to utter a single obscenity loudly enough to be recorded on video.

Anyway, wow, those are some impressive results.

I purchased a Desert Eagle L5 (Lite weight ~50oz, 5" Barrel) in .50 AE a few months back. I love the gun! Even at almost a pound lighter than a Desert Eagle XIX 6" (~72oz) I think it is a very mellow shooter. A 1911 weighs about 40oz... for comparison. My Springfield XDS with .45 +p loads is MUCH more punishing. My DB9 micro 9mm (~11oz) with regular 9mm ammo is even worse than the XDs.

I will admit the first round of .50ae is a bit of a shocker, mainly because every muscle in my body was tense as I had no idea what to expect. After a few rounds I started to get used to the recoil, knew what to expect and loosened up. 50 rounds in a session at the range isn't punishing. After single 7 round mag of 9mm through the DB9 and I don't really want to shoot any more.

I have never considered the best .50ae ammo... I figure any .50ae ammo will get the job done. lol! I do have a few mags worth of 300gr GoldDots over 33gr of H110 loaded... just in case... though. H4227 produces much less flash than H110... but that kind of defeats the purpose of owning a DE.

I never realized they made a "lightweight" Dessert Eagle.

I liked my older nickeled 50AE, I think a L5 in either 44mag or 50AE would be welcome in my safe.

The L5 in 357 has been out for a couple of years. The L5 in .50ae started shipping earlier this year.

I have been looking at DE's for a long time now but always had an excuse to talk myself out of buying one. Biggest excuse is that they were just too big. The L5 fixed that. Then I couldn't buy a DE not in 50ae... They fixed that earlier this year with the L5 in 50. I had the cash and I turned 50 this year so a 50 L5 most likely from the very first batch was ordered.

I had no idea what I was getting into, the only other DE I have shot was MANY years ago and in .41mag. A lite weight 50 was pretty intimitading on the first shot... and it left me a little startled... but with a big smile!

Now shooting her is second nature and all my other hand guns seem just a bit more timid now.

I like paddle holsters for my 1911's and 92f at the range. They are just convenient. No such holsters for DE's that I can find, no less the L5's.

My only complaints would be the trigger and the finish. I adjusted the trigger per Kahr's instructions and it is much better. The Black Oxide finish is just cheap. Some day it will get a nice cerakote finish. Oh, the sites suck too... But they were easy to change to fiber sites from Kahr's website.

Good to know. It's gonna be hard to justify one when I just went today to pick up my 5" 44mag 629, but if one comes by when I've got the spare cash I'll definitely be tempted.

I shot a .50 caliber Desert Eagle when I was in Las Vegas, last year. I fired one shot and put it down. My arm felt like I had touch a live wire. No damage, just not something I want to repeat. It is just too much in the recoil department for me.
