Arrgghh! I've just done the STUPIDEST thing I've ever done with a gun!

like the type that flush their rental car keys down the toilet.

I've never done that, but I did drop my work issued beeper in the toilet once. Luckily, the water was "clean." (Heck, I ALMOST dropped my customized CZ-75 into the porta -john at LFI-1 once. I caught it in mid air and pinned it against my body unitl I could reach over and grab it with my other hand. THAT was close)

Here's an update, btw: I've given up on getting the rod out myself. Tried the dowel and another cleaning rod and it's not going to tap out. I'll be calling a gunsmith buddy of mine soon to take it over to him. It's just going to be embarrasing, is all...

If I have the correct picture in my head, the rod handle is wedged into the receiver without enough room to pull the handle back and bend the rod to get it out of there.

The rod part of your cleaning rod goes almost all the way thru the handle, so if you have enough room to manuver, a good sized drill through the center of the handle should cut the connection and allow you to pull the rod out thru the muzzle. After that, a good sized plastic mallet to whack that offending handle will clear the obstruction.

the steel rod is threaded on the end and the slotted nut threads over the rod

drilling out the nut will be painful

what might work is to loop some paracord under the rod in front of the handle and lever the rod perpendicular to the bore.
