As a physicist, I find this movie trailer offensive

Reality vs. Fiction

But not just any fiction but SCIENCE FICTION. As in patently not of this world. This movie is based on a comic book series which was sci fi fantasy. So put away your reality hats because just like the matrix, this world isn't real. :D

And while the gaudy 1911's just aren't for me the sawed off shotgun looks downright BAD MOJjjo!

Count me in for a ticket!

As a romantic, I hope that such pistols shots can be done.

But as an owner of customized vehicles (and the burden of their cost) I think Angelina should be horsewhipped for what she did to that Viper--if it was real.

There may be a wannabe gansta that shoots one of heah peeps, but I would bet money some kid will powerslide over another one trying to pull a getaway.

It would be an interesting experiment to see how much tumble you could put on various rounds with a controlled movement of the muzzle at various velocities up to the muzzle velocity of the bullet. What "would" happen to a 9mm bullet exiting a barrel that was moving horizontally at 1000fps?

Pretty soon we'll have new ammo box markings:

.38 +P C - curve, .38 +P S - slider, .38+P K - Knuckle, .38 +P CU - Changeup.

Remington's new ammo line for that custom self defense situation.

Angelina Jolie and a horsewhip in the same sentence cause me to think about dominatrix outfits and other related stuff.

Originally I was going to post something along the lines of "I don't go to movies for physics lessons, just like I don't go to a physics lecture looking for a good story."

However, after watching the preview for that movie, I'd have to place the liklihood of there being a good story at pretty close to nil.

Ok, that was just stupid.

Looks like good hot/humid summer afternoon movie material now that I've gotten the "You've got to be kidd'n!" over with.

Oh, as for the car, who says the poor boy didn't end up with broken ankles and a head injury being scooped up like that. ;)

Does this move even have a plot?

there is no story in movies anymore... thats why i only watch the older ones.
this movie looks incredibly stupid to me for the fact i mentioned earlier...
as with the curving of a bullet around someone, i dont know what to tell you about that... but i will ask my physicist buddy about it so he can tell me how much bull is involved here
hopefully the movie is a little entertaining...

As a physicist, I guess I can understand how you are disgusted by this movie, but from the link you provided, 99% of what I saw on that trailer was out of the realm of physics...or at least practical probability. Movies like that, for me anyway, fall under the same category as Lord of the Rings, or something similar; it's supposed to be out of this world cool like that ;)

While the bullet's flight path won't curve laterally by slinging the gun sideways...it will alter the bullet's path and cause it to strike to the right or left...depending on which direction the gun is slung.

If the bullet is forced to accelerate laterally as it transits the bore, momentum is established. Momentum must be conserved, and the bullet will continue to move in that direction after it exits until it encounters an outside force. Viewed from the starting point, it will appear to curve...but it's actually moving in a straight line. It's just not moving straight away from the line of sight.

Looks like Grade A garbage.

Besides. Looking at it from a gun nut movie fan instead of a standard movie fan, I can't help but point out to everyone that lame gun play movies like that make us look like a bunch of children.

Imagine the helo assault scene in "Apocolypse Now" done in CG.
Picture all the vehicle stunts in the Bond films as CG.

Try this one: Watch the Future War battle at the start of Terminator 2.

Now watch the Future Dream sequence from Terminator 3.

Now thats 12 or so years between them, and I swear, the CGI Hunter/Killers and Endos from T3 look nowhere near as good as the animatronics from its predecessor.

Personally, the amount of CG in films now takes almost all of the entertainment out of it for me. Not too long ago, stuntpersons and skilled actors did incredible things. Real locations (at least ones that exist on a stage) made a scene real and memorable.

That, among other reasons, is why I liked the most recent Bond movie. Somebody actually did those things (referring to the first 15 minutes or so), even if it wasn't the actors. That chase sequence was just awesome.

talking about CG versus great filming, what remains as my all time favorite shoot, one that was just plain amazing, was the French assault on the casino in The Longest Day. Good golly, that scene went on, without a cut away or change, from one side of the town to the other, with explosions, men getting killed, etc. ONE entire scene, fluid and without change. That still simply amazes me when you consider there were zero special effects beyond the explosions and deaths. Men were not added in later. It was all done in real time from one part of town to the other. Simply amazing and something I have not seen repeated in any other movie of any kind of any scale. It is still breath taking all these years later.

As a person with a brain... and some semblance of morals... all of Hollywood offends me.

I had to point out what CG has done to eliminate parts of the art.

I couldn't agree more. I am willing to supend my disbelief if there is some grounding in reality - but with CG you are just watching a sophisticated cartoon.

and

Anyone else think this may prompt someone to get hit with the Darwin stick?

:D :D

The movie looks like crap. Cheap CGI stunts offensive to anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics, Matrix-ripoff theme...so, it will probably do very well with the general public. With the hottie in there, anyway.

Speaking of how hollywood has changed, in terms of the skills required by the actors to do a scene - go back and watch an old movie where Fred Astaire does a continual-shot 15-minute dance scene - it boggles the mind how talented and in shape they were - nobody knows how to do that today - they don't need to.

Okay, I just was able to watch the trailer without distortion due to a slow connection. First, she cuts him off at the ankles, and then he is throwing a curve ball with a gun. I guess he had a gun with really weird rifling. :D
