Well folks,
Had a good time at the range today with my little PM9 and new Shooters Chrono Beta Master Chrony. I also got to chronograph some velocities and did a few comparisons.
Weapon:
Kahr PM9 Matte Stainless
Barrel Length 3.0"
Temperature 65 Degrees F
Load #1 Winchester USA 115 Gr FMJ ( White Box 100rd count Value Pack)
1004
1035

Average: 1020 FPS
Load #2 Speer 124 Gr +P Gold Dot
1121
1098
1100

Average: 1093.4 FPS
Load #3 Winchester USA 115 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
977.4
987.1
992.7
1028
962.3
Average: 989.5 FPS
Load #4 Winchester USA 147 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
843.4
863.7
877.9
867.4
866.7
Average: 863.82
Load #5 Federal Personal Defense 135gr JHP
922.2
934.7
928.5
926.8
921.0
Average: 926.64 FPS
I'll try to keep this thread running by posting a new load once every two weeks. Next week should be Corbon 115gr +P JHP and Remington 124gr Golden Saber. I've also got a good chance of adding the old Winchester 115gr STHP. (Silver Tip Hollow Point).
I did enjoy shooting the Federal 135grain Personal Defense load. It seems to be a good heavier bullet load for those who are fans of a heavy 9mm bullet. The highest velocity of course was the Speer Gold Dot 124grain +P Load, my current carry load in this pistol. Also noticed was a bit of velocity loss when going from the Winchester 115gr FMJ to the 115gr JHP. My initial understanding was that Winchester designed them to almost duplicate each other , but the velocity figures don't quite indicate this. Still, the difference is insignificant from a practice standpoint.
I also fired the same loads through my 14.5 barreled 9mm AR15. Here are the comparisons.
Load #1 Winchester USA 115 Gr FMJ ( White Box 100rd count Value Pack)
Kahr : 1020 FPS
AR15: 1280 FPS
Load #2 Speer 124 Gr +P Gold Dot
Kahr: 1093.4 FPS
AR15: 1374 FPS
Load #3 Winchester USA 115 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
Kahr: 989.5 FPS
AR15: 1212.2 FPS
Load #4 Winchester USA 147 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
Kahr: 863.82 FPS
AR15: 1002 FPS
Load #5 Federal Personal Defense 135gr JHP
Kahr: 926.64 FPS
AR15: 1133.5
As you can see you don't get a lot of velocity gain going from a 3" barrel to a 14.5" barrel. However you do get a very controllable weapon with almost zero muzzle blast. A 124 Grain Speer Gold Dot moving at 1374 fps is still pretty impressive. Actual .357 Mag performance (when compared to a handgun) in very low recoiling package. A 25round mag of .357 magnum power is nothing to sneeze at for home defense.
Good Shooting
