Hi all.
I just picked up an asm 1851 conversion in .44 colt. I would like to replace the cylinder with one for .44 special.
1. is this safe and possible? Will the pistol shoot safely and accurately if I do?

2.does anyone know where I can buy one?
Thanks
Jim

That appears to be a special modification. You need to talk to the gunsmith that modified it because I've never seen a pop in conversion cylinder for, one, an ASM built revolver and two, in that caliber.

A gunsmith with the proper reamer can change the chamber to 44 Special, presuming the cylinder is long enough for the loaded cartridge. He needs a reamer that will cut for the rim as well, as the 44 Colt has a bit smaller diameter rim.. I have Open-tops, one is 44 Colt, the other is 44 Special, I shoot 44 Russian in both... Try 44 Russian, you'll like it.

Cardcutter, welcome to our little band of afficionados of the black arts. 2nd what Crawdaddie said about the smith that made this beastie on a '51 frame.

I believe the feller to talk to about this on this forum would be "Hoofhearted". Most of the 1851 .44s Ive seen are brass framed which are not suitable for cartridge conversion. I haven't seen Hoof here lately. Catch him at his web site:

I see he can provide conversions for the 1851 in .38 Long Colt using Kirst snd R&D/Taylors conversion cylinders.

The biggest cartridge conversion would be Whitneyville-Walker converted to take a .460 S&W cartridge filled with 60 gr of bp, the .45 BPM.

I couldn't agree more with Elhombre, talk to Hoofhearted. He'll be able to walk you through this and provide a conversion for your '51 ASM.
