Good morning,

I have a StarBM that I purchased about 5 months ago. I Love how it feels and shoots. The only issue are the magazines. They sometimes have a round nosedive causing a failure to load. It shoots and feels great, though. Liking it so much, I wondered if I could find a comparable all steel firearm that is still produced. Lo and behold, ATI makes a 1911 in 9mm.

For the price, it can't be beat. I took it to the range today and fired 75 rounds from Browning (124 gr bullets), magtech (115gr bullets), and reloaded 124 grain bullets. No jams whatsoever. And I especially love the way it feels. It came with a 10 round magazine, so another magazine will be on order.

Below is the initial shot group:

I can adjust the rear sight to get the alignment correct, but the front sight looks staked. Looking at how's low it shoots, I'm thinking it needs a shorter front sight?

I've done sight replacements, but they all have been on push sights (s&w, RIA, Ruger). Is it possible to replace the front sight? How difficult us the process?

TIA

After all these decades - I've only come to appreciate the original Colt's Commander concept after getting a Kimber Pro Aegis a bit over a year ago.

Took a long time to get around to it but damn, if I don't *get it* now.

Here's to your continued enjoyment of the platform.

I have always loved the more compact size and lighter weight of the Colt Commander. I like mine in .38 Super as it's extremely easy to convert it over to 9mm.

Yes. It wasn't until I obtained the StarBM labeled as 1911 style that made me like the compact 1911. I have a 45 1911 with the 5 inch barrel. It is really nice and solid, but The compact 1911's seem more versatile, and for me have been just as accurate once sight adjustments are made. One of these days I'll splurge and get something like a Colt or Kimber, but until now, the models made in the Philippines satisfy the itch for the classic 1911.

I assume you were shooting at the large center bull. If it's because it is shooting high, you need a taller front sight. If you think about it, it makes sense. The taller the front sight, the lower you have to hold the gun.

If you were shooting at the upper left small bull, then you are correct. You need to shorten your front sight.

Just the opposite with the rear sight.

You could make the front sight shorter (filing some off) or replace the rear with a taller one. I have the same model in .45 and love it---looking to get one in 9mm.

Thx for the comments. Yep, the target is the small bull. I was hoping there'd be an easier replacement option. I'll be filing it down to shorten it. I've been cautioned against filling it to short, but based on shot placement I think I'm going to start with shaving 1/8th off.

I filed down the front sight and adjusted the rear for windage last week. Finally got around to shooting the ATI. The first group was to see the effects of my front sight work. I aimed center of target at 7 yards and hit on target but slightly low of center. 20191207_140617.jpg

For the second iteration, I used my RIA 1911 45 which I shoot at the 12 o'clock position for center mass. I then shot the ATI using the same method. I feel pretty happy with my results.

Overall I'm extremely happy with the ATI 9mm 1911 and for the price, it is definitely a nice firearm that I won't treat like a safe queen. It's solid, has an excellent weight, and shoots straight. I have yet to have a FTF/FTE in ~150 rounds. The ammo used for the 9mm was 115 grain Magtech and Remington bullets, but I think I'm going to start 124 grain over 115 grain as the recoil feels better to me.
