Attack Rabbitt!

SOme friends and I are out doing our part to exterminate an overpopulation of Jack-Rabbitts one evening.

In this part of Texas it is customary to hunt them from the back of a pickup. With a spotlight and .22s....at night.

Half way into the night we spot a jack and give chase. Several shots are fired. Rabbitt ignores us and continues on. He runs a hundered yards and stops. We slam the brakes on as a hail of gunfire errupts over the cab of the truck. Rabbitt is still fine.

He runs a nother 50-60 feet and we turn the truck broadside to the rabbitt so I can get the light on him better. Rabbitt looks at us as a hail of bullets kicks up dust around him. He decides to charge.....Yes, charge! He runs straight at the pickup, and at the last instant jumps up at the side of the truck! He hit about midway up on the passengerside door. I dropped the light. No more shots are fired. Guns are lowered. Everyone stares in disbeleif as the rabbit trots off into the fading glow of the headlights.

I asked if anyone else saw that. No one answers, just keep staring off into the darkness.

Pursuit is not given. WE honor his valor and bravery by leaving him to sire another generation of brave rabbits.

I've seen the same thing!
Long, long time ago a bud and I were cruising country roads at night; anything with eyes that glowed in the dark was in season.
A jack was sitting in the middle of the road some thirty yards in front of us apparently mesmerized by the headlights. I got out in front of the pickup and shot once with a .22. The rabbit took off running straight for me! I stepped to the side and it ran under the truck. "Back 'er up" I yelled to my bud, who is still laughing from seeing me dodge the attack rabbit.
He put it in reverse and started slowly backing up, the jack just moved right along with him not willing to give up cover.
Finally I yelled "Faster!" and the truck accelerated leaving the bunny behind. This time my shot was a fatal one. We were checking out the thing, looking for signs of rabies or other abnormalities and found where the first shot had hit - it had put a crease across the top of his skull.
I still don't know if he was brain damaged or just pissed off but it's been thirty years and I still haven't forgotten it!

I watched as Bububas muddy malarial eyes scaned the grease wood and cactus covered plains ahead. The men had been hard on the trail all day and every second of it had been adrenalen laced as we knew that at any moment we may encounter him. Bububas my south Texas tribal Cotiilian tracker had seen the reults of not being ever vigalant in his territory and had scars both physical and emotional to show for it.

Then all at once a strange silence came over the shimmering plains alll that could be heard was the rustling of grass and the cry of ox pecker birds. Fuzzy buggsy death was about to show himself.

As he broke cover our eyes meet his were a mix of anger vengence and concentraition on the deed he was going to press home. And in a split second Fuzzy came he came hard steel muscle stretching grey furry hide puffs of dust exploding from his feet.

I raised my custom mauser .505 gibbs and at the last possible second laid the top of the front sight onto the bridge of his nose and pressed the trigger.

Oh yes I have survived the wrath of fuzzy buggsy death!!!

Maybe, but why not use a .458 Winchester Magnum and be sure?

I find the .375 H&H to be pretty minimal for Fuzzy Buggsy death. I perfer something in the .458 Lott to .600 NE. When fuzzy comes there is really only one solution and it involves litterally tons of Ft Lbs and a large bore.

I've heard verified accounts of buggsy taking 20+ rounds of .375 and all it did was agrivate him. Remeber we are talking Fuzzy Buggsy death here not just some little ole 50 or 60lb rabbit.

A .500 S&W for field mice? Not a bad choice if your just hunting common field mice. A little on the weak side for the high plains species however.

H&H, you're right. Didn't really want the Smith anyway so I'll just use my 7STW.
I will carry my Kimber though to use on myself in case one of the rabid rodents makes it through and runs up my pant leg. A fate worse than death.
