I'm posting this in hopes of potentially finding new hunting grounds. Perhaps you or somebody you know or are related to owns some acreage that is plentiful and maybe you don't hunt or have an abundance of wildlife to where one more hunter wouldn't put a dent in it? I'm seeking to deer, turkey and dove hunt when I have time. I'm a family man with two children and recently married a wonderful woman who also hunts. I'm a medical professional that works for the ambulance service that cares for all of Carter county in south central Ok. I tread lightly and only hunt legally, morally and responsibly. I only take animals that are worth taking and leave no waste. The only thing that might be left behind is a spent plug of snuff from my lip. I pick up all spent casings, given I don't lose them in the grass.
I'm more than happy to help with buying seed for food plots, help mend fence, or any other jobs around your property that you may need help with. I can't offer a lot in the way of cash, but I'm not opposed to a small monetary donation. If anybody knows of or has any land within two hours or so of Ardmore I would appreciate your permission more than you could ever know! I'm also not opposed to sharing my harvests after processing. I don't ask for your permission for free. I think it has to be worthwhile for everybody involved and will strictly abide by any rules you feel are important.

Thank you in advance!

From my personal experience I would offer two pieces of advice. First, I would suggest that you try to lease 160 acres for hunting within your driving range. You should be able to lease land where you are the only one hunting the land at a price of about $4 and acre which would total $640 for a yearly lease. That would give you control of the hunting on that land and you should get an understanding with the owner that you will be the only hunter. Most landowners will lease their land to someone who lives 2 hours away rather than leasing to some local because they know you would not be there that often. That gives you a real advantage. Sad to say, the days of good ol boy use of land is almost over so your only choice is to lease. Second, go to the convenience store in a small town where the land looks good for hunting and place a note on the bulletin board that you are looking for 160 acres to lease for hunting and you are willing to pay $4 per acre. You could work your way into some kind of good deal. Even if you don't find the piece of land you are looking for the first year it will put you in a position to locate nearby land that is even better. You should be looking for a long range plan because hunting will get better if you can control the land for several years. Pick a town that you like and type the name in on google. Use the google earth map to look at the surrounding areas for a prospective place. Also, Ardmore is a pretty place, you are lucky to live there.

Thank you for the advice, and I completely agree that the "good ol boy" days are far gone. BUT, with that said, I think that there are still some good ol' folk around that would be willing to allow certain people that they trust onto their property. These are the people I'm seeking! I'm just hoping to find an older couple that has a hundred or so acres that they don't harvest and in return help them with some chores around the house that they may typically have to hire somebody else to do.
I understand your point on the 2 hour drive thing, but that just simply isn't feasible for me as I work a LOT of hours. I work 24-48 hours at a time, so having a lease or property nearby is most ideal so that I CAN manage the minerals, food plots and water in that area without it having to be a trek every time. I often drive 4-6 hours on transfers to Oklahoma City and/or Dallas and another 2 hours after getting off a shift like that just isn't in my playbooks lol.

I agree about Ardmore being a beautiful area and my parents own 15 acres north west of town, but I don't think they're too keen on me taking the deer that they've been trying to bait in to enjoy watching. After working the streets in the ambulance for the last 3 years, I've realized how violent of a city Ardmore truly is! I work stabbings, shootings, hostage situations and suicides on a regular basis. It's absolutely bananas! The outskirts......they are the true gems of this area! That's where I got the trophy buck in my avatar. About 15 miles west of Ardmore in a town called Wilson on a 40 acre oil lease with active pumpjacks.

"You should be able to lease land where you are the only one hunting the land at a price of about $4 and acre which would total $640 for a yearly lease."

Any lease that cheap in OK will have livestock on the place. With cattle you can't easily do game plots.

alsagr, you are exactly right. A farmer can lease his grazing land for $10 an acre and increase his revenue by leasing hunting for $4 an acre. Cattle on the land is no problem because food plots are not necessary if across the fence there are wheat fields, alfalfa fields or feed fields like hay grazer. That's why it's important to look at google earth to see what's around the land you want to lease. All you need on grazing land is a pen of hog wire (field wire) about 15 yards square with a corn feeder in the center. The more land you have the more feeders you need. The land I hunt is 100% grazing land but farming is nearby. If you really think about it food plots require a lot of time while filling a corn feeder once a month does not and you get a better result with the feeder. You see big bucks in a wheat field all the time on TV but in reality they become nocturnal and are off to the grazing land (broken land) by daylight. In 50 years of hunting I have only taken one buck on a wheat field.

Ag talk is to farmers what THR is to us shooters.
You might find someone in your area willing to make an agreement.
Just an idea, no guarantees.

Of course there are no guarantees, but the info is better than asking no people. I'm totally ok with the property being an oil lease as the noise from the pump jacks and the presence of people frequently helps to take the edge off the deer. That's just what I gather. I think they spook less easily around these areas. With that said, I did get scented several times at the last place I hunted which was an oil lease. While they can smell people regularly, I think they know the difference in concentration of the smell between a person that has been in the area within the last few hours vs somebody that is presently in the area.
I'll go sign up and see what I can find! Thank you for the help.

SoonerMedic:

i own 40 acres a few miles south of Elmore City. The place has two pump jacks. About 15 acres are wooded, including a thicket. i've killed two does there but have never planted a game plot or hung a feeder. Will send a PM with the Lat and Lon so can check it out on google earth. If you would be interested in hunting there, have at it.

That sounds like a deal to me. alsaqr is really doing something good. Just one suggestion, when you find out were the land is located go the FSA office (Farm Service Agency) in Pauls Valley located at 105 S Indian Meridian Road and look at their landowner map. They usually have a map on the wall that is open to the public where you can see the names of all of the surrounding landowners. That way you will know who your neighbors are so when someone asks what you are doing there you will have knowledge of the surrounding area and who owns what. You can bet someone else is already hunting that 40 acres and it will be a surprise to them when you show up.

If anyone is hunting that area they are doing so without my permission. The only folks i ever see on the place are oil well maintenance workers. Sooner Medic and his family are the only folks with permission to hunt there.

I've heard that the oilfield folks that check the wells tend to poach these oil leases when they see wildlife there. I just hope that doesn't happen when I happen to be there....IF it does, I hope that there are sheriffs within a few minutes.

As for the map in Pauls Valley, that's a good idea just in case. However, if anybody happens to stop and question me I will be able to direct them to alsaqr directly so that he could rectify the situation. I'm pretty sure with it being as rural as it is, the odds of it are unlikely.

No doubt there are poachers in that area; OK is infested with poachers. Spent a day or two each of the past three deer seasons hunting that place: But i never saw another hunter in the area. One time i found a set of sheds just behind the old house. That deer would have scored 145-155 points.

Well, hopefully nobody has found him yet and he will be able to score in the 200's! :D
