A guy at work is selling an Austin and Halleck .50 bolt muzzle loader, I have never heard of these but looked on the internet, they are out of business. Anyone have any experience with them? My issue would be parts availablity. It seems like a well built rifle, but should I pass on it and look at a Knight or T/C or even a Remington?

If you have all the pieces, the austin Halleck is a fair muzzleloader. The barrel is plated if you don't have blue. Other than that, they tried to make it all things to all people and that is a flaw if you're using the primer attachment. Use the #11 or musket cap and find the right bullet and they shoot excellently.

I bedded mine because there is only one simple screw holding the thing together and this helps a lot.

This is with a .499 sized bullet.

There are some quirks... like taking the bolt out, but all in all don't spend a lot of money on it but they do shoot and if yours is to be wood... they are a most lovely affair!

Aloha..

I have several and have had them for a long time.I wouldn't shoot anything else.Other than having to get the hang of taking the bolt out I can't find any fault.Once you learn how to remove the bolt it's a piece of cake. They advertized it as the most accurate muzzeloader right out of the box and I agree. The last deer I shot was 235 yds,It will shoot 150 grs of powder and mine zeroed in at 100 yds is only a few inches lower at 200,They were made in blue with a composite stock and nickle plated with both composit an a checkered wooden one.The wooden ones are bring around $500.on gunbroker with some people asking over $1000.The blue bring less but they still shoot. The earlier models made in I believe wesson Mo.are better quality I think. If you can buy it right I'd jump on it.

Thanks for the help. I thought the barrel was stainless in the photo, it must be the nickle plated model, composite stock. Has 5 boxes of projectiles and accessories, he wants $400. Does that sound reasonable?

For me, I'd say that is the top end of marginal, but if its in good condition and you're getting some extra goodies with them it's worth considering... what the weak spot for you is going to be the nipples. There are options for 209's however...

A little on the high side depending on the projectiles,if they are high priced sabots maybe no too bad.Normally the blued gun goes around $300-350

There is one on gunbroker right now for $319. without any bids on it
