Picked up a Austin Hallek mountain rifle, 50 cal. 1:28 twist. Just a few minor issues, such as alignment of the nipple/hammer, and a cracked ramrod. Overall, the quality is decent, so for the $300 price tag, I'll try it out. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle? Round ball twist in 50 cal. should be 1:66, but I wonder if the conical twist will still shoot the ball accurately?

You never know, but maybe you can try shooting some small targets with light loads at the short range of 25 - 30 yards and have some round ball shooting fun that way.
It's not the distance as much as the size of the targets and the X's that you're trying to hit anyway. And 25 yard shooting is an NMLRA competition shooting discipline isn't it?
It's just like they say, where there's a will there's a way!
And it sounds like a very nice rifle too! :)

Keep the loads light to moderate (40-60 or 70 gr) and the fast twist should be ok with the prb, the shorter the range the better, of course.

After all these yrs. of shooting black powder, I never made an atempt to shoot ball from fast twists. Going to test the gun with deer loads toda.y

If you're going to shoot prb from fast twist with 'deer loads' (70-90 gr?) you should keep the range to about 50 yards, and absolutely less than 75 yards.
