Round Rock, TEXAS
hello all,

Im new to the world of long range shooting and wanted to know if there is a good place to go around Austin, Round Rock or Georgetown?

I use reds but would like to know where the good places around town are...

Thanks

For being a city in Texas, Austin isn't a very good place to live if you really enjoy shooting. Austin is the most liberal city in Texas and affords the least opportunities for shooters. Technically Austin only has one shooting range. A ten lane indoor shooting range isn't big enough for a city the size of Austin. I know Reds has another location in Pflugerville, But that's not technically in Austin and it's way too far north for me. Sometimes I do drive out to Lonestar gun range in Lockhart. It's an outdoor range with a covered 100 yard rifle range and two covered pistol ranges. That's also where I took my CHL class.

Lonestar is going to be your best bet. Round Rock will be opening up a 1k yard range soon.

i shoot at austin rifle club. a bit of a drive, but it isnt ever really crowded (last time i went, there were 4 rifle guys and 2 pistol, sharing something like 30 lanes.

Where is the 1K range going to be in Round Rock? If tha's really going to happen that's awesome.

I'm relatively new to shooting, but have to say I really like Red's. Got a yearly membership (if you go once/week, you save money after about 6 months). It's close to Round Rock (15 mins from my house), you don't have to wait to move your target in/out (a la Eagle Peak), and there's rarely a wait for a lane/bay/station.

For CHL qualification, there's http://stansrange.com/ in Florence. I'm not sure about the rules for that range; was wondering if one could practice an El Presidente there.

www.krtraining.com has an area faq.

The Austin/San Antonio area is a rich environment for competition. There are loads of IDPA, IPSC and Steel matches each weekend.

Dietz on Hwy. 46 off 281 has long range competitions. It's a touch of a drive - 290 W to 281 and head south.

About things being far. HaHa - this is TX, distances are long. We drive to myraid opportunities. Just get in the saddle in the morning.

This is from an ex-NY'er who used to think you needed a caravan to go 5 miles by car. :D
