Like the title says, I'm newly relocated from No. VA to Austin, and was wondering if anyone here has taken the TX CCW class at Red's in Pflugerville, and whether you'd recommend it or not.

TIA,

Training in Austin

dev_null, wander on by www.krtraining.com and have a look. In the interest of full disclosure, I teach classes with Karl and highly recommend the whole family of KRTraining instructors.
Nothing against Red's. Not sure who they have teaching their classes now but they get the job done.
Stay Safe,
John

I took my first CHL class at the current Red's Pflugerville location, except it was Cook's at that time. The instructor then was Ross Bransford (chl-texas.com) I thought he was pretty good and down-to-earth . . . he now is somehow associated with Heritage Firearms, a shop whose owners I consider to be ethically challenged. :barf:

I took my renewal class from Tom Schaefer (associated with KR Training) and it was OK, although it took a couple of hours longer than the website indicates.

One of my shooting buddies took his renewal there. He said it went OK, except for the requalifiing shooting ... there were a few people that hadn't shot their gun in the 4 years since getting the permit the first time and had to keep shooting over and over to qualify. And the rest of the class had to just sit around and wait for them to be done, so it took a lot longer than it should. Guess its just the luck of the draw on who else takes the class with you.

I took mine from Tom Shaefer through KRTraining and it went well. I looked into the Reds Pflugerville one since its close to my house, but they only offered it as an all day Wednesday class, no weekend classes (only renewal classes on the weekends, at least that's how it was a year ago). Didn't want to miss a whole day of work. KRTraining had weekend classes.

Also, KRTraining's classes included the photos and fingerprinting, don't remember if Red's did or not. Otherwise, you have to go to the police station or other approved place for the fingerprinting (Tom Shaefer is a retired cop, so he got "approved" as an official fingerprinter).

That reminds me . . . when I took my first course at Cook's, my fingerprints were taken by a Pflugerville cop. Tom Schaefer took my prints for my renewal.

Both times they had to be redone at the DPS office in Austin, as neither set from the classes was judged "acceptable."

Fortunately, other than a $10 fee, this wasn't much of a hassle since I simply had DPS check the prints and redo them each time when I hand-carried my application in to their office in Austin.

These experiences - difficulty in getting prints from a co-operative subject using a regular fingerprint kit - would make me a very, very skeptical juror in any criminal case involving fingerprint evidence.

I also took my class from Tom @ KR training, absolutely wonderful time, and I would recommend him to anyone looking to take the CHL class.
