NSW Opp(osition) calls for greater police powers after Sydney shooting

The New South Wales Opposition has used the latest fatal shooting in Sydney's south-west to call for police to be given powers to conduct random car searches.

A woman and man are dead, after a home at Greenacre was sprayed with 100 bullets, in what police say was the result of a long-running feud between two families.

Opposition Police spokesman Peter Debnam says it is time the Premier stopped denying there is a gun crisis on the streets of Sydney, and devoted more resources to the issue.

"At the moment, the police are doing the best they can but they've got very limited resources," he said.

"What we need the Government to do is a legislative response.

"Have a look at random weapons searches of vehicles, have a look at increasing the rewards, have a look at doubling the number of detectives and also deal with the fact that there's no deterrent in the court system at the moment to having illegal weapons."
The logic is just damn scary. :what:

Yeah Sydney drivers will really appreciate random vehicle searches, seeing as how they're such a patient lot.....

Although it would not surprise me if such an idea became law, I'd say this is just the NSW oppositions attempt to try and denigrate the NSW state government. Afterall the likelyhood of the conservative NSW opposition winning an election any time soon isn't all that great.

Besides -

Sydney's south-west

kind of says it all ( ie very much the wrong side of the tracks ).
