My dad has been offered an M1A with 1000 rounds of Austrian surplus. The surplus comes in battle packs. The guy selling it is going to let the ammo go for the price of $.19 a round.

What is there to know about the Austrian surplus? Reloadability?

Also, he wants to know about the Garand vs. the M14. What is better on one vs. the other?

Without a doubt, the ammo is worth over .19 per round, think closer to .40.

Garand vs. M1a? Having not shot the Garand, I can only speak from study and using the M1a. The gas system on the M1a is an improved version of the Garand. The mag vs. no mag issue, I like a removeable mag. Spare parts seem to be much cheaper for the Garand. The M1a will not bite your thumb. The M1a is a little lighter and in my opinion, balanced better. The M1a is easier to put a scope mount on. The M1a has a higher resale value (usually), so your father could sell the M1a later, it will hold its value, and get something else later.

Did my best, hope it helps, sounds like a good deal to me.

If your dad doesn't want it, I will drive down to Missouri to get it.
Me first! I'll drive there from Michigan to get that, depending on the price associated with the rifle.

Even if the ammo is non-reloadable, that's 1,000 rounds of fun plinking ammo.
