Hello. A friend of mine is getting an Auto Ordnance 1911 A1 Pistol soon . I would like to hear from any of You who have shot or own one .He is getting the Parkerized version and brand new/Kahr.Thanks for any opinions .

There is an article in the the April 2005 "On Target" magazine focusing on the Thompson Custom 1911 in stainless. She's a beauty. They test fired loads from Black Hills, Win, Fed, and Rem, with average groups from 1.39" with the BH to 1.61" with the Fed at standing rest from 25 yards.

I want to see one up close for sure.

I saw that review, and it raised a BIG question.

If you look at Kahr's catalog (either the print version or the on-line version), they list Kahr/Auto Ordnance 1911s in one area, then there's a separate page for the Thompson 1911. Which remonded me about the dispute over whether their slides are cast or forged, with about equal numbers of people saying "yes" and "no."

Is the Thompson 1911 a separate, special model that's different from/better than the Auto Ordnance models? Does anyone know for certain? If not, why do they list the Thompson several pages away from the other 1911s in the printed catalog?

Auto Ordnance

Can't say what the new Kahr pistols are made out of, but the older Thompson
Auto Ordnance guns not only had cast frames and slides, but almost every other part of the gun was a casting. The slides and frames were probably cast by Essex in the bad old days before Gary took over. Overall quality is head and shoulders above the older stuff they turned out.

The older guns were pretty bad, though once in a while a good one would surface...but even the exceptional ones weren't anything to write home about.

I've heard conflicting reports about the Kahr-built guns...with some praising
and others cursing the day they laid eyes on it...which is a vast improvement over what they were in the early 80s when almost nobody had anything good to say about'em. I'm still tryin' to find a Kahr so I can open it up and have a look-see for myself...So far, no luck. Nobody around here has one. Norks and Springers are thick as hops...but no Kahrs.

Best I can do...

I just purshased an AO made by Kahr. Took it to the range, 300 rounds of Winchester White box, not one failure. It just kept eating and spitting out brass. Shot placement was good, the tiny sights do not help. It is put together well, park job looks great, all in all a keeper.

Thanks for the help so far. Glad to hear that last post.Im glad to hear your new AO shoots well for you . I have recomended this gun to a friend .Price was a big factor and my friend only wanted to spend 400.00 I heard Kahr arms got hold of the company and turned the 1911s into a fairly good pistol
