I've seen a few on some online at decent prices, but haven't heard much about their quality. I've got the itch for a milspec 1911, and have been drooling at the Springfield Armory 1911A1 Milspec, but some of the Auto Ordnance 1911s look pretty nice, too.

Probably won't be for a couple months that I could get one anyway, but I thought I'd do some reconnaisance first!

Any suggestions on any other brands is welcome, as far as milspec 1911s. The Springfield is probably what I'll end up with. I've already found the SA for about $550 new.

Thanks in advance!

uh oh you've stirred the hive now.......!

what i am about to say is based on the posts i've put out in the past 6 months, at various times asking approximately the same question. and on the experiences of the FFL dealer that i do most of my shopping a buying through (my dealings with the man lead me to take what he says as truthful to HIS experience) be warned there is a part of this post where i will speak "1911 blasphemy" .....

i'm betting that one of two things will happen now. you'll either get a roaring silence, or you'll see the majority of the resposes coming from, folks who don't own an A-O gun of any sort , and never have. telling you to stay away from them (auto-ord) for a multitude of reasons. ranging from "they're not fit for trotline anchors" to objections to buying ANYTHING that gives money to Kahr, b/c Kahr is owned by Justin (son of Sun Jung) Moon, and "one should not support them Moonies!!".

so i will give you MY (another person who has looked as deeply as he could into the question of getting an Auto-Ordnace 1911) take on the situation. eventually i WILL be getting one of AO's parkerized 1911A1s. adn here is my take on the major objections.

1. the fact that Kahr and thus AO is owned by the business arm of the "moonies" (never can remember the offical name). ok answer this question. if you're Catholic would you buy from a company owned by a Protestant?? a person of the jewish faith?? even if they've made a pledge to tithe back a portoin of their profits to their church. i bet you say "YES! of course!! why the heck not?!?" to me it's the same deal a religion is a religion (with very few exceptions satanism amoung them). but it's YOUR choice.

2. the level of quality control assurance under the previous owners (numrich inc. aka "Gunparts"). if we hold to this logic no one would buy ANY product by any company that had ben through a bad spell b/c of a change in leadership or being sold to a company interested only in the brand name. (winchester, and Harley Davidson come to mind) truth is the QC since Kahr took over has steadily improved (this from the mouth of my local FFL dealer who stands behind all his sales) to the point where (again in my dealer's words) the "lemon rate" is about the same as that of springfield.

the local FFL dealer i go through for almost all my "gun dealings" perfers to sell Auto-ordnace over all the other common "entry level" 1911s on the market. but has had quit stocking them b/c he's a very small shop and the bad rep built during the "numrich years" makes them rather slow sellers compared to say charles Daly and Springfield. but if asked his oppinion on an inexpensive decent 1911, by a customer that is willing to wait a day or two fora gun to come in, he'll still suggest the AO as a first line choice.

like i said others are very likely to rip my statements to shreds. and again, this is ONLY my milage on the subject. what i have observed, and been told by a reliable source that could have told me that the AO was a cheap piece of trash, simply to get me to buy a more expensive gun from him. i have not yet bought ANY 1911 from him, and in truth my next pistol purchase will be a springfield Mil-spec, but this is due to the gun being for the mutual use of myself and my wife, and my wife wants the Springfield b/c she can see the 3-dot sights on it better than the "millitary minimal" sights on the AO "Parkerized"

good luck

I DO own a AO and even bought it in the bad old days (1990). It shakes, rattles and rolls but is accuate and flawlesslesy reliable. Best $250 I ever spent.

Say what you will, and I know there are lemons out there, but mine is a winner...not pretty but she rocks.

I've heard that the Kahr management has whipped them into shape on a consistent basis.

Kris,

ijust making sure i didn't come across opposite of what i meant. my intention was to express the same basic feeling as you.

they're MUCH better than most folk here would have you believe. good to know that i'm not the only one. of course you posted the same thing to the thread i started a few weeks ago too... :)

I bought an Auto-Ord in the late 1980's and it was unreliable, inaccurate, and slightly mis-machined. I have heard a few mixed reviews on the new production versions, but most seem to be better than the old production guns.

I have one of the older "pre Kahr" AO 45's. It shoots fine, never had any trouble with it. I did have it throat and polished, but I do that with all my 45's, so that really doesnt count. I agree with Detritus about the peole who complain, I think this goes for a lot of things out there. More bad info is passed on from whats read than from whats really experienced. I'm not saying those with problems didnt have them, all makers have their bad days. I have a Springfield Loaded that was total trash until I spent a lot of time and extra money on it. I'm begining to think I'm the only person in the world that has a bad one from what I've seen in the posts. My "trashy" AO worked out of the box, the Loaded didnt, wouldnt even feed ball, and it cost almost $300 more. If the AO makes you nervous, for about $1-150 more, you can get a Springfield mil spec. Personally, I'd go look at the gun you want to buy, rather than order it. At least you get to see and feel what your getting and know thats the one your getting.

A shooting partner of mine has a new, 1 mo. old AO, 600 rds, flawless functioning, no problems. If you like em I'd say go for it, I think kahr has made a big difference. I have sent 1 gun to kahr for a problem and they took great care of me, so that is another plus.(others here have posted about bad customer service, I can only relate my own good fortune!).....tom

Detrius...

...nope, sorry friend, didn't mean to sound like I was disagreeing with you (sometimes this internet forum medium is difficult to express what you're intending)

I was actually agreeing with you that many people express opinions without first hand knowledge..."I heard that a guy who knows a guy said..." syndrome.

I was speaking from personal experience. My AO is probably in thae 50% that were good in those days. It was (is) my pin shooting gun...several thousand rounds without a failure (except for one obviously bad handload I put together)

I hear they're getting better under current ownership.

I had an AO in the mid 80s (was all I could afford at the time), and it worked as intended. Wasn't tight by any stretch of the imagination, and the internals were in desperate need of "cleaning up", but once that was done, it was as accurate as I was at the time, and reliable.

I later made the move to Colts and they were much better, though several of them gave me problems along the way.

The poorest made 1911 I've ever owned was an AMT, as someone in the machine shop was having a really bad day setting up that day.

Today, if I was in the market for an inexpensive 1911, I'd likely look at the AOs before looking at the imports, like Charles Daly... can't say for sure which I'd choose, as I haven't had the opportunity to examine one close up, but I'd give them a look.

Decided to go look around on Kahr's site. This popped up:
IMPORTANT MOVING NOTICE

KAHR ARMS CORPORATE OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED FROM FEBRUARY 21, FRIDAY 8 A.M. UNTIL FEBRUARY 24, TUESDAY 8 A.M. DUE TO OUR OFFICE RELOCATION. DURING THAT TIME OUR PHONE AND FAX LINES IN OUR NEW YORK CORPORATE OFFICES WILL BE DOWN. THE FACTORY AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN WORCESTER WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THIS MOVE.

* * *
Since my calendar says Tuesday is the 25th, I'm still a bit nervous about Kahr.... :D

Actually, the Auto Ordnance site is interesting: http://www.auto-ordnance.com/

The Deluxe 1911 has "Hi-profile 3 white dot system" sights, so maybe Kahr is paying attention to the market.

Might take a look next time I'm at my gun shop.... :)

Detritus- This must have completely slipped under my radar but who is Moon and why do you refuse to deal with him and his family? Is he that Unification church guy?

Well, there were AOs on the IPSC circuit during the Leatham/Barnhart heydays of Colt and Springfield Armory, so they couldn't have been too bad. I definitely think they'd be worth a look. I agree with 9 X 19 on the AMT. My Govt. model was 1 of only 2 guns I've ever sold.:barf:

This must have completely slipped under my radar but who is Moon and why do you refuse to deal with him and his family? Is he that Unification church guy?
Justin Moon is the head of Kahr, and he designed the original Kahr pistols. Smart, talented, entrepreneur.

He also happens to be a Son of Sun, Sun being Sun Myung Moon, the founder and head of the Unification Church known as the "Moonies."

Is Justin some kind of religious extremist? Doesn't appear so. Has the RU invested in Kahr Arms? Probably, but it is also an owner of the Washington Times, a stellar newspaper of this country too.

Don't condemn the son because of his father, and you can find that in the Bible too....

Had a pre-Kahr AO 1911 for a few weeks...

Came close to having a bad accident with it, it's fit was so poor it had sheared one of the locking lugs on the barrel, and was working on a second. I sold it for parts after the 1911-smith showed me what was going on inside. I went with Norinco and Caspian afterwards.

I'd like to think Justin and crew have turned around the quality of the Auto-Ordnance 1911, based on how well my Kahr K9 performs. Time will tell?

There are a few links to external reviews on AO's website. Of course theyre all generally positive, thats why they have them linked...but it is a useful source of info and pics on the Post-Kahr-Takeover 1911s.

Go here and you'll see the review links in the middle of the page, blue text:

want ot clear the air about myt feelings toward the Moon family.

I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S PATOOT ABOUT THEIR RELIGIOUS CHOICE (sorry to be so emphatic)

I have absolutely no problem with the Moon family at all.

the point of my comment was to point out that refusing to deal with them b/c of the alleged "moonie connection" is like saying "i won't buy from them b/c their (insert religious group here)" in other words, i find it rather silly and mildly repugnant. but this is a free country and these are my veiws only

i guess that the way that my original post was writen caused it to come over as opposite of what i ment in that particular regard.

oh and last i heard Justin wasn't exactly a follower of his father's beliefs.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Like Detritus, I couldn't give a rat's patootie about the religious beliefs of the owner (or family of the owner) of a company.

I like the products, and let the products speak for themselves.

The AO pistols look nice, but I asked out of sheer curiosity. I will likely be getting a Springfield Milspec, as I have a Springfield 1911A1 Loaded that runs like a pussycat. Feeds and spits out anything I feed her without a hiccup. Since I'm probably going to use the milspec for carry and IDPA type competition, I will go with a brand I already know. Later, when I can afford it, I'll get an AO for sh**s and giggles.

Also, I recently got an AO Thompson, pre Kahr, NIB from a guy on another board. I was reluctant because of quality issues I'd heard about, but luckily the one I got runs great! I put over 500 rounds through her the first time out, and only had 2 FTFs, that ended up being caused by light handloads.

I'll give an AO 1911 a try someday!
